SAMIHAH ZAMAN (ABU DHABI)

The UAE has long been a model for advancement, with a strong focus on developing a sophisticated infrastructure network that supports the nation’s economic, social and lifestyle goals.

Developed over decades, these networks are now at the heart of the nation’s strength and stability, reinforcing the country’s global reputation for reliability and resilience in the face of significant challenges.

As the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi has set the pace for progress, prioritising integration, efficiency and continuity. Across the emirate, major infrastructure investments — from roads and bridges to ports and rail — are designed not only to support economic growth, but also to ensure stability in times of disruption.

Transport and Logistics
Within the emirate, the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), which oversees the municipal and transport sectors across Abu Dhabi, leads the charge.

Delivering key road and transport projects, including major connections linking residential and economic hubs, the DMT works to ensure mobility that supports connectivity, trade, and economic growth.

In 2024 alone, the DMT delivered infrastructure projects worth more than Dh4 billion as part of a wider Dh75 billion development pipeline, including major road and bridge upgrades designed to enhance connectivity across Abu Dhabi.

These included a Dh315 million upgrade to Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street, which has reduced morning peak-hour delays by up to 80%, as well as two new bridges connecting to Al Reem Island, which have significantly reduced commute times for those working and living on the island.

A state-of-the-art national rail network will also soon transform transport options within the UAE. Developer and operator Etihad Rail has said the 900km system will connect industrial centres, ports and 11 cities across the UAE, creating the UAE’s first integrated national passenger network and significantly strengthening internal mobility. Beyond long-term benefits, recent developments have demonstrated the network’s real-time value.

In coordination with Abu Dhabi authorities, Etihad Rail operated passenger services between Al Ghuwaifat Station in Al Dhafra Region and Al Faya Station in Abu Dhabi, enabling the safe transport of more than 350 passengers amid temporary flight suspensions. Operating under exceptional circumstances ahead of the official launch of its passenger services, the network demonstrated its vital role within the UAE’s pioneering emergency response frameworks.

Maritime and Aviation
In the UAE, the strategic alignment between transport infrastructure and ports ensures the efficient flow of goods, reinforcing its role in global supply chains.

AD Ports Group operates a network of ports and terminals with global connectivity, enabling multimodal logistics across economic zones, and providing services critical to maintaining business continuity during periods of uncertainty.

The company handled 60.8 million tonnes of bulk and general cargo, and 7.2 million TEUs of containers, within the first nine months of 2025. And as the regional situation erupted, AD Ports Group issued a statement saying that all operations remained fully functional, even anticipating increased volumes across its diversified global maritime network as a result of shifting trading routes.

The UAE’s aviation infrastructure also continues to anchor its global reach. Abu Dhabi Airports serves millions of passengers annually, with Zayed International Airport (AUH) designed to handle up to 45 million passengers per year at full capacity.

Along with Dubai Airports, which operates Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), the UAE has continued to facilitate international travel, connecting markets and global communities.

Digital Infrastructure
Complementing its physical infrastructure, the UAE’s advanced digital and telecommunications networks position the nation at the forefront of global connectivity, allowing for smart government services and seamless delivery.

Major telecom providers like e& (formerly Etisalat) and du deliver nationwide 5G coverage and extensive fibre-to-the-home networks.

Indeed, the UAE consistently ranks among the top countries in terms of mobile internet and broadband speed in the Speedtest Global Index, as was the case in the latest index issued in February 2026.

Taken together, the advanced infrastructure on offer in the UAE ensures the nation’s resilience and continued progress even when faced with significant challenges. By combining world-class connectivity with forward-looking planning, the UAE continues to be a benchmark for how integrated infrastructure can drive sustainable growth, enhance quality of life, and safeguard long-term national stability.
