Happiness is in everyday moments: be it time with family at a neighbourhood park, a sunset stroll along the Corniche, or an evening coffee with friends.

For Abu Dhabi residents, it is closely tied to the high quality of life in the emirate and spaces designed with people's wellbeing in mind.

As the world marks International Day of Happiness on Friday, these experiences take on added meaning, reflecting how thoughtful urban planning, access to green spaces, and a strong social fabric can shape how people feel day to day. In Abu Dhabi, happiness is part of the everyday rhythm, residents told Aletihad.

"What makes me happy is knowing that I live in one of the safest and most secure cities, with so many opportunities and an easy lifestyle," said Ahmed Al Darmaki, an Emirati who lives in the UAE capital.

"Everything I need is close by, from shops and universities to restaurants and activities," he added.

That sense of convenience and security mirrors a national approach. The UAE has long placed public welfare and wellbeing at the heart of development planning, measuring progress not only by economic growth but also by social cohesion, opportunity, and overall quality of life.

This people-first approach is delivering results, with international observers recognising its wider impact. In the latest World Happiness Report, the UAE ranked first in the Arab world and 21st globally.

In the Mercer Quality of Living Survey, Abu Dhabi consistently ranks among the cities with the highest quality of life in the Middle East, underpinned by strong infrastructure, safety and public services.

The ratings translate into real-life experiences. Omar Al Aleeli, another Abu Dhabi resident, appreciates how the emirate has created spaces that help people switch off and reconnect.

"I disconnect from work by spending time with my family at home, or going out to places like the Corniche to walk and talk with friends," he said. "It helps you step away from work and reset."

Public spaces play a key role in maintaining balance in life, Al Aleeli said. "In recent years, more sports facilities, parks and walking tracks have opened in residential areas, which makes it easier for people to stay active and spend time outside."

Al Darmaki said time with family is also central to his sense of happiness. "During the weekend, I usually go out with my family to the mall, do some shopping and sit at a coffee shop together," he said.

The UAE sees life through the same lens, with 2026 designated as the Year of Family. The nationwide initiative highlights the importance of strong personal relationships and community ties in building resilient societies. It promotes programmes and policies that strengthen family life, encourage social connection, and support balanced lifestyles.
