ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)
United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), the country’s first and flagship university, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first university in the United Arab Emirates to surpass 30,000 Scopus-indexed publications, reinforcing its leadership in research excellence, innovation, and global impact.
Since publishing its first research paper in 1978, UAEU has demonstrated exponential growth in scholarly output. This achievement reflects nearly five decades of commitment to advancing knowledge and addressing national and global challenges through research.
Key publication milestones include the first-ever UAEU research publication in 1978; reaching 100 cumulative publications in 1988; the publishing of more than 1,000 papers in a single year for the first time in 2018; and the publishing of a record over 3,500 publications during 2025, the highest annual output in the university’s history.
UAEU’s research output is characterised by both quality and diversity. Of the total publications, 77.7 per cent are journal articles, 14.8 per cent are conference proceedings, 4.9 per cent are books, and 2.6 per cent represent other scholarly outputs.
Collaboration remains a key driver of the UAEU’s research success. The University of Sharjah is the UAEU’s top national academic collaborator, reflecting strong inter-institutional partnerships across the UAE. Beyond academia, Tawam Hospital is the UAEU’s leading non-academic collaborator, highlighting impactful cooperation in healthcare research, clinical innovation, and translational science.
In alignment with the UAE’s national priorities and the global sustainability agenda, UAEU is also the top contributor to the UAE’s Scopus-indexed research addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Between 2020 and 2025, 44 per cent of the UAEU’s publications directly addressed one or more UN SDGs, demonstrating the university’s strong focus on sustainability-driven and solutions-oriented research.
