Hitting the tracks as one of the UAE’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, Etihad Rail is not only transforming mobility; it is opening more pathways for Emirati talent.

Among those at the forefront is Sara Mohamed Musllam Al Mazrouei, the UAE’s first Emirati female train captain, whose journey mirrors the country’s longstanding commitment to women empowerment.

“My journey in the railway sector began after attending Abu Dhabi’s Institute of Innovation and Professional Development, where I heard about the Etihad Rail project,” she told Aletihad. “It was a national project playing a pivotal role in the country’s land transport system, enabling the seamless integration of cities and industries through a safe and sustainable rail network.”

Inspired by the scope and purpose of the project, she began researching the sector, eager to contribute to a development shaping the UAE’s long-term vision.

Her early work focused on freight operations, with hands-on duties running trains across the national network. “My responsibilities included train operation and readiness, coordinating with the control room to ensure smooth arrival and departure, avoiding any obstacles along the way, and delivering high levels of service in a completely safe manner,” she said, noting that the standards matched “the highest international benchmarks.”

Inside the driver’s cabin, digital systems support precision and safety, she said. “The cabin was extremely comfortable, featuring an electronic screen displaying information such as permits, speed, brake location and availability, train braking system parameters, and fuel levels.”

After building extensive experience on freight routes and completing intensive training, Al Mazrouei is now fully qualified to operate Etihad Rail’s light passenger train. And she understands the magnitude of her next mission.

“I now stand on the cusp of a historic moment with the upcoming launch of the country’s first passenger train.”

Her motivation is rooted in public service. “I am driven by a deep passion to serve my country and support the daily lives of its people through a safe and efficient transport system that connects regions across the UAE,” she said.

Reflecting on what has driven her growth in the field, Al Mazrouei pointed to both personal resolve and institutional support. “Passion, willpower, determination, and perseverance are fundamental to success,” she said. “Experience grows and dreams become reality when you choose the right workplace - one that develops your skills. That is what I found at Etihad Rail.”

Exposure to international expertise also proved critical. “The meetings and workshops I participated in under the guidance of leading railway experts from around the world have led me to where I am today.”

Beyond technical training, she said her journey has also been shaped by national role models, such as Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF).

“Her Highness is a pioneering and inspiring figure for Emirati women and women from around the world,” she said.

To young Emiratis weighing their academic and career paths, she offered a message of resilience. “Remember that every day is a new opportunity for change, and giving back will return to you twofold,” she said. “We live in a country that values talent and overcomes challenges.”

She added, “Do not despair in the face of challenges, and do not let fear deter you from your ambitions. The path to success is not without obstacles, and it requires patience and perseverance to participate in the advancement of our nation.”
