ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)
Etihad Rail on Wednesday announced the full network details of the UAE’s passenger railway system, marking a major step that reflects its firm commitment to developing the nation’s transport and infrastructure ecosystem. The passenger rail network will connect 11 cities and regions through strategic stations, forming the first fully-integrated national passenger railway system that enhances connectivity across the Emirates and provides safe and reliable mobility services for citizens, residents, and visitors.
In early 2025, the first four main stations in the network were announced in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah. On Wednesday, the company announced the remaining stations in Al Sila, Al Dhannah, Al Mirfa, Madinat Zayed, Mezaira’a, Al Faya, and Al Dhaid, which will be operated in phases.
Commenting on the announcement, Eng. Azza Al Suwaidi, Deputy CEO of Etihad Rail Mobility, emphasised the strategic dimension of the project, saying: “Our preparations to launch passenger transport services through the national railway network in 2026 translate the vision of our wise leadership in building an integrated transport system that supports the country’s economic and social fabric.”
She added: “The passenger rail network represents a vital pillar of the national transport system, supporting the country’s development trajectory and strengthening inter-emirate connectivity. It also reflects our continued success since 2023 in operating the freight train. This national achievement is the result of the combined efforts of all partners and stakeholders, and relies on exceptional national expertise supported by global best practices. We have also ensured that the network is equipped with the latest fleet of trains and advanced technologies in collaboration with international operators, guaranteeing the highest levels of quality, reliability, and safety.”
She continued, reaffirming the national identity and future vision: “Our trains embody a strong Emirati identity that reinforces national cohesion, and they represent a long-term national investment in the transport and infrastructure sectors. These strategic projects contribute to boosting domestic tourism and set a new regional benchmark for human centric sustainable mobility, helping enhance community wellbeing and quality of life.”
A Comfortable and Seamless Travel Experience
The trains have been designed to offer a comfortable and modern travel experience, featuring safe and ergonomic seating, contemporary interiors, full Wi-Fi coverage, and individual power outlets at every seat. The service will operate on a regular and precise schedule, providing an excellent and reliable alternative for passengers, ensuring smooth intercity travel away from road congestion.
In this context, Eng. Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail, provided additional details on the operational aspects of the passenger services.
He noted that the main station locations were carefully selected to be within key residential and economic hubs, such as Mohammed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, University City in Sharjah, and Al Hilal City in Fujairah, ensuring easy access and efficient service. He added that the selection of all station locations was coordinated with local authorities to ensure proximity to population centres and alignment with each emirate’s urban planning.
Al Shehhi added: “The passenger trains have been designed to offer a reliable and efficient intercity mobility option, providing a calm and comfortable travel experience. Ten out of the 13 trains in the network’s fleet have already arrived in the UAE, all of which have undergone rigorous testing and have been certified according to the highest global quality and safety standards. Each train accommodates up to 400 passengers, enabling the fleet to transport around 10 million passengers annually.”
Regarding network development works, he said: “This achievement is the result of diligent work spanning three years of planning, design, and execution, with total working hours reaching 24.5 million, involving more than 7,000 experts and workers.”
Extensive National Impact
In addition to enhancing mobility, the passenger rail network is expected to deliver wide-ranging national benefits, including boosting domestic tourism, supporting movement across the country, contributing to reducing carbon emissions, strengthening social and economic ties between the Emirates, improving quality of life, and facilitating access to all parts of the nation.
