The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has secured more than 50 patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in 2025, reinforcing its status as a leading regional institution in innovation, applied research, and the advancement of the national knowledge economy.

These patents span five major research domains aligned with the UAE’s national priorities and innovation agenda such as: Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, Water and Environmental Engineering, Construction and Manufacturing Technologies, Energy and Power Systems, and Biotechnology and Bioprocessing.

The university also obtained two patents in artificial intelligence, reflecting its growing focus on digital transformation and smart technologies designed to address evolving societal and developmental challenges.

Dr Rami Beiram, Associate Provost for Research, said: ‘’We are advancing an innovative research model that goes beyond traditional academic publication to deliver practical solutions that serve industry and society. These 50 plus patents demonstrate the capability of our researchers to produce high-value innovations that align with national priorities and future needs. Our next phase focuses on accelerating the commercialisation of these patents, supporting spin-off startups, and strengthening partnerships with government and private-sector entities.

Through these efforts, we aim to transform ideas into market-ready innovations that drive economic growth and support the UAE’s vision for a competitive, sustainable, knowledge-based economy.’’

A defining strength of UAEU’s innovation ecosystem is its commitment to empowering young talent. In 2025, 14 postgraduate students and 20 undergraduate students contributed as co-inventors, highlighting the university’s dedication to cultivating the next generation of researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs capable of shaping the future of technological advancement.

These achievements are closely aligned with the UAE’s National Innovation Strategy and UAE Vision 2031, which aim to build a diversified, knowledge-driven economy supported by advanced research, technology, and human capital. By translating scientific discoveries into practical applications, UAEU continues to strengthen the nation’s global competitiveness and long-term sustainability.
