‘Start small, think green’: Young advocate urges fellow UAE youth to do their part in climate action

As COP30 unfolds in Belém, Brazil, calls for stronger commitments to protect ecosystems and accelerate the global green transition are growing louder. Young Emirati environmental advocate Ghaya Al Ahbabi is closely following the proceedings, urging UAE youth to contribute to climate action — in whatever way they can.

Speaking to Aletihad, Al Ahbabi emphasised that sustainability is a collective responsibility and engaging the youth, as well as the wider communities, ensures that “change happens at every level”.

“You are the generation that will shape the future,” she said, addressing the youth. “Start small, collaborate, and think of solutions that are both sustainable and scalable. Your ideas can inspire entire communities, and the world is ready for the solutions you have to offer.”

At just 14 years old, Al Ahbabi has emerged as one of the UAE’s youngest sustainability advocates. She served as UN and UNICEF Ambassador for COP28  and has been known as the youngest ambassador for Masdar’s Y4S.

As she reflected on the ongoing summit, she expressed pride in the UAE’s sustainability journey, which is rooted in the same core values that shaped her advocacy.

“One of the initiatives I am most proud of is the UAE’s investment in renewable energy,” said Al Ahbabi, who is also the founder of a youth group called Green Buds.

“Projects like the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park—the largest single-site solar park in the world—demonstrate our commitment to clean energy. Alongside Masdar City, a global model for sustainable urban development, these initiatives show that development and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.”

From the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, which has set global standards for the safe and efficient use of nuclear energy, to the UAE’s active role in the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) — headquartered in Abu Dhabi — the nation continues to demonstrate how sustainable practices can scale globally.

The UAE’s model is increasingly inspiring developing nations, Al Ahbabi said, noting that “sustainable development doesn’t have to be a barrier to economic growth”.

“By investing in green energy, promoting innovation, and fostering public-private partnerships, countries can leapfrog to cleaner, more resilient economies without compromising growth,” she said.
