AMEINAH ALZEYOUDI (ABU DHABI)
With 2026 declared the Year of the Family, the UAE community can expect year-round initiatives that aim to strengthen intergenerational bonds, enhance communication at home, and empower senior citizens, according to the Family Development Foundation (FDF).
Speaking to Aletihad, Maryam Mohammed Al Rumaithi, Director-General of the FDF, said this national focus underscores that the family is a cornerstone of social development, unity, and stability in the UAE.
"The Year of the Family represents a national milestone, integrating efforts between government and community institutions … to enhance the quality of life of families in Abu Dhabi and across the country," she said.
Al Rumaithi added that the initiative reflects the commitment of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF), to strengthening the family's role in raising well-rounded, values-driven citizens capable of contributing to the nation's progress.
The FDF, along with its strategic partners, is set to roll out programmes that focus on fostering "a culture of dialogue" and strengthening family ties, Al Rumaithi said.
The wellbeing of senior citizens, in particular, is a top priority for the foundation, she added.
"Senior citizens represent the heart and soul of the Emirati family, a source of values and wisdom," Al Rumaithi said.
The FDF is developing initiatives to empower seniors to continue making meaningful contributions to society.
Nurturing intergenerational relationships is a key pillar of the Year of the Family, she said. "Through our initiatives, we aim to strengthen the bonds between generations - placing senior citizens at the heart of the Year of the Family as a bridge of values and wisdom between the past and the future."
Among the foundation's activities for the upcoming year are workshops, family-focused events, and educational campaigns designed to foster mutual understanding and healthy communication within households.
"FDF's efforts will focus on strengthening family ties, supporting parents in their essential roles, and ensuring that every member of society has access to opportunities for growth and fulfilment," she said.
