MUDHI ALOBTHANI (ABU DHABI)

The Young ADIPEC programme marks its 13th edition this year with a renewed focus on innovation, sustainability, and technology-driven learning. Held under the patronage of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, and supported by the Ministry of Education and ADIPEC organisers, the programme continues to inspire thousands of Emirati students to explore the energy industry from new perspectives.

This year, the initiative has attracted more than 1,100 students from 47 schools across the UAE, with the goal of connecting young minds to the evolving global energy landscape.

“Our core idea is to prepare a generation capable of leading the energy sector through innovation and technology,” said Hanadi Aliwat, Projects Director of Young ADIPEC.

“This year, we focused on artificial intelligence and hydrogen because they represent the future of sustainable energy.”

Empowering Youth Through Innovation and Science

The 2025 edition introduces a series of hands-on workshops and training sessions led by top academic institutions such as Khalifa University, New York University Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates University, and Abu Dhabi University. These sessions allow students to explore scientific disciplines such as geoscience, physics, and mathematics while developing practical solutions to real-world challenges.

“We want students to see that science and mathematics are not just academic subjects,” Aliwat said. “They are essential tools for creating innovative solutions that can shape the world of tomorrow.”

The programme also highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the energy sector. Workshops demonstrate how AI technologies can improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and accelerate the transition to clean energy systems. In addition, the “Hydrogen Journey” workshop introduces students to various types of hydrogen and their potential as a clean fuel of the future.

“We want them to understand that hydrogen is not a distant concept—it’s already part of the roadmap toward a sustainable energy future,” Aliwat added.

Innovators Zone and Methane Challenge

This year marks the debut of the Innovators Zone, a dedicated space showcasing projects developed by former Young ADIPEC participants. Over the past 13 years, more than 7,000 students have joined the initiative, many of whom now work in the energy industry. These alumni are presenting innovations that address issues such as water conservation, energy efficiency, and waste management.

“Seeing our former students return as industry innovators and mentors is one of our proudest achievements,” said Aliwat. “It shows how the programme continues to create a long-term impact.”

The Methane Challenge, another highlight of this year’s edition, brings together 65 schools and 84 student projects focused on developing creative solutions to reduce methane emissions. The winners will be announced on the fourth day of ADIPEC.

“This challenge encourages young people to think critically about sustainability and environmental responsibility,” Aliwat said. “It’s about showing them that their ideas can drive real change.”

Through education, mentorship, and hands-on experience, Young ADIPEC continues to serve as a bridge between classrooms and careers, preparing future leaders who will drive the UAE’s vision for a sustainable energy future.

“We believe that our true resource is human capital,” Aliwat said. “By investing in our youth, we invest in the future of energy itself.”
