DUBAI (ALETIHAD)
Within two hours of receiving a report, Dubai Police tracked down and arrested two masked thieves who had stolen Dh660,000 from a supermarket and attempted to flee the UAE with the money.
The duo was apprehended at the airport moments before boarding their escape flight.
In a statement, Bur Dubai Police Station revealed that the two suspects had planned to rob a large supermarket at night. Breaking into the store through its rear entrance, the suspects removed Dh60,000 from four cash boxes in the premises. They then forced open the main safe to steal an additional Dh600,000 before fleeing the scene.
The theft was discovered early the next morning when one of the employees arrived before opening hours, and the police was immediately alerted.
A rapid-response team comprising a duty officer, forensic experts, and CID investigators arrived at the scene and reviewed the evidence. Despite the suspects’ attempts to conceal their identities with masks, officers were able to trace their movements and, using artificial intelligence tools, data analysis, and collected evidence, successfully identify them.
Further investigations revealed the thieves' intention to escape the country with the stolen cash. Swift coordination between Bur Dubai Police Station and the General Department of Airport Security then enabled officials to nab the suspects at Dubai International Airport and recover the stolen funds.
The suspects have been referred to the Public Prosecution for legal action.
