Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City organised a special awareness event on Thursday to mark Pink October, also known as the Month of Hope, which promotes breast cancer awareness and early detection among women in the UAE.
The event began with opening remarks by Dr. Nahed Al-Ala, a breast surgeon, who spoke about the importance of the occasion. "This month is the month of hope," Dr. Al-Ala said, "and we remind ourselves and our community that caring for your health is the greatest gift to yourself and your loved ones."
A panel discussion was moderated by Dr. Aida Al-Awadhi, Consultant Oncologist and Head of the Oncology and Hematology Department. She guided the discussion, ensured that all perspectives were heard, and emphasised the role of hope and resilience in the journey of each patient.
Dr. Aisha Al-Salmi, Consultant Oncologist, shared expert medical insights on breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment options, helping participants understand the importance of early detection and the latest advancements in oncology care.
Ms. Halima Al-Raisi, Physiotherapy Specialist, discussed the role of physical rehabilitation in supporting patients' recovery and improving their quality of life during and after treatment.
Ms. Roaa Al-Busaidi, Nutrition Specialist, highlighted the critical impact of diet and nutrition on cancer prevention, treatment support, and long-term health, offering practical advice for patients and survivors.
Ms. Mariam Al-Mundhri, Director of the Women's Support Office at the General Women's Union, noted the importance of structured support systems, guidance and resources for women undergoing treatment and for survivors navigating life after cancer.
Ms. Aziza Al-Mughali, Psychologist, provided insights on mental health and emotional well-being, discussing coping strategies for patients and the role of family and community support in overcoming challenges.
Ms. Linda Haris, Senior Nurse, shared frontline insights from patient care, showing compassion, daily support, and the critical role of nurses in the patient's journey.
The session also featured moving testimonials from survivors.
Wiam Al-Hashmi, diagnosed in February 2025 and who recently completing radiotherapy, inspired attendees with her journey, highlighting the importance of positivity, resilience, and being a source of encouragement to others.
Sara Al-Sheibani, a breast cancer survivor, stressed the importance of early screenings, consistent follow-ups with oncologists, and family and community support in ensuring successful recovery.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Al-Awadhi expressed gratitude to the medical team and participants for their role in transforming pain into hope. "It is an honour for our medical staff to celebrate hope, which brings joy to each patient's journey," she said. "Thank you for helping turn illness into a story of healing and optimism."
The event also included interactive activities for attendees, such as character drawing and name writing in Arabic calligraphy, a warm welcome with flowers, and a photo booth to capture the memorable occasion.
