The European Union will introduce a new Entry/Exit System (EES) at Schengen border crossings starting October 12, replacing manual passport stamps with a digital system that records travel movements and biometric data.

The EES will apply to non-EU and non-Schengen nationals entering or exiting the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days within any 180-day period), including those with short-stay visas or visa exemptions.

The new automated system will collect and store personal details, travel document type, biometric data (fingerprints and captured facial images), along with the time and place of each entry and exit. It will also log refusals of entry.

Upon first arrival, border officers will collect travellers’ biometric data and passport details. This information will be stored securely in the EES database.

On subsequent visits, travellers will not need to repeat the biometric registration, as future entries and exits will be logged automatically using the existing records.

EU citizens, Schengen residents, and those holding long‑stay visas or residence permits are not affected.
