As the new school year begins, experts are reminding parents to give their children a healthy start by packing balanced meals in their lunchboxes, and whipping up some nutritious breakfast.

Proper nutrition is essential for a student’s health and academic success, said Yara Alhasibi, clinical dietitian at Ebn Hayan Healthcare Group.

“It directly impacts their activity, ability to concentrate, and performance during the school day. Because school hours are long, the lunchbox becomes a golden opportunity to provide children with energy and balanced nutrients,” she told Aletihad.

Alhasibi specifically cautioned against relying on quick, instant meals.

“Processed meats such as sausages, frozen nuggets, sweets, biscuits, and ready-made juices may seem convenient but can harm children’s health and reduce concentration.”

Instead, she suggested simple, healthier alternatives: “Milk, fresh fruits, unsalted nuts, whole-grain sandwiches, crunchy vegetables, and even homemade baked goods offer children the nutrition they need while keeping meals enjoyable.”

Alhasibi also recommended keeping lunchboxes fun with some colourful fruits and veggies, homemade bites, and plenty of water.

Sara El Baba, clinical dietitian at NMC Royal Hospital, said it would be good to “divide meals into portions of carbohydrates, protein, vegetables, fruits, and a healthy snack”.

“Ensure variation, involve your child in preparation, and use safe, clean packaging,” she said.

El Baba also spoke about the wider routine and turned the spotlight on breakfast plates and hydration.

Breakfast, she said, gives children the energy and concentration they need at school.

“Children who eat a healthy breakfast before going to school are better able to concentrate and are more energetic. A good meal should include whole grains, protein, and fruit, while avoiding pastries and sugary items that cause energy crashes.”

Water is another essential that should not be overlooked in a school bag, El Baba said. “Dehydration, even if mild, can affect attention and memory.”

She also reminded parents of small daily habits that make a big difference. “Teach your child to wash their hands before and after eating, eat thoroughly, and not to share food to prevent infection. Avoid relying solely on school cafeterias if healthy options are lacking.”
