SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)

With families across the UAE preparing for schools reopening on August 25, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) is renewing its flagship road safety initiative “A Day Without Accidents.”

Under this programme, the public is invited to sign a pledge and commit to safe driving practices.

Those who register and adhere to the safety guidelines on August 25 will receive an automatic deduction of four traffic points from their records, effective electronically on September 15.

Speaking to Aletihad, Brigadier General Ahmed Saeed Mohammed Al Sam Al Naqbi, Head of the Traffic Awareness Team at the Federal Traffic Council, said the campaign has been gaining momentum through the years.

“Figures show a significant increase in participation in the “A Day Without Accidents” campaign. The initiative has also been expanded to all members of society, with the participation of all national institutions in both the public and private sectors,” Brig. Gen. Al Naqbi said.

Schools, local authorities and transport providers have also stepped up to ensure public safety as campuses reopen, he added.

“Work is carried out with prior coordination, intensive meetings, and studies to ensure smooth traffic flow and safe access for students and teachers.”

Brig. Gen. Al Naqbi linked the campaign to a broader safety strategy for the school year.

“The Ministry of Interior and the country’s General Police Commands are working to prepare and implement preventive measures to ensure smooth traffic flow and the safety of roads and road users,” he said.

Patrolling will be ramped up at the start of the academic year, in coordination with relevant ministries and authorities. Awareness campaigns will also be rolled out, Brig. Gen. Al Naqbi said.

How the Reward System Works

Motorists who wish to take the pledge for “A Day Without Accidents” may sign up online through the portal:
https://portal.moi.gov.ae/eservices/direct?scode=716&c=2.

Those who are able to avoid violations on August 25 will have four black points removed from their licence. The reward will be processed automatically by September 15, with no need for drivers to visit service centres.

“Points will be deducted electronically through a process involving all local police authorities (local police general headquarters) across the country, immediately after the 25th,” Brig. Gen. Al Naqbi said.

“Participants will be identified and their compliance with traffic laws and conditions will be verified. The deductions will take place by mid-September 2025.”

The campaign’s impact will be tracked using internal and external reviews.

“The ministry’s relevant departments monitor the impact of campaigns according to precise standards and criteria, as well as public opinion polls,” Brig. Gen. Al Naqbi said.

“We also work with external entities to monitor this impact and identify opportunities for improvement, while awareness-raising activities and campaigns continue throughout the year.”
