Several Abu Dhabi residents have received some seedlings to plant and grow in their homes and neighbourhoods as the municipality launched its latest community-focused sustainability initiative.
Abu Dhabi City Municipality — on behalf of the Department of Municipalities and Transport — on Saturday launched its “Planting for a Sustainable Tomorrow” drive, which seeks to engage the community in enhancing urban spaces by creating more pockets of greenery.
Under the initiative, as many as 45,000 flower seedlings and 7,000 assorted plant seedlings have been distributed to residents in several areas, including Al Shamkha, Al Khatim, Al Wathba, Al Adla, Al Riyadh, and Al Shawamekh.
Local residents expressed their enthusiasm upon receiving the seedlings.
"I've always wanted to have a small garden at home, but never knew where to start,” said Saeed Al Mohramai, who lives in Al Shamkha. “Receiving these seedlings gave me the motivation I needed. It feels great to know I’m doing something good for my community and the planet.”
By providing free seedlings to the community, Abu Dhabi City Municipality aims to instil a greater sense of environmental stewardship while encouraging sustainable practices at the grassroots level.
Mohammad Al Remeithi, another local resident, emphasised the initiative’s long-term value: “These plants will not only make our neighborhood more beautiful, but they also represent a step toward sustainability. We feel proud to be part of something that benefits future generations.”
Another recipient, Aisha Mansour, lauded how the government “cares about involving people in positive change”.
“[The initiative] gave us a sense of ownership over our surroundings and inspired us to keep our area green and clean,” she said.
