The National Experts Program (NEP), launched in 2019 as a platform to encourage Emirati experts to play a leading role in the transformation of future-growth sectors, is reaping rich dividends in fostering innovation and addressing critical challenges.

In a recent interview with Aletihad, Hamad Al Shehhi, Investment Manager at ADQ, and an NEP 3.0 fellow from the Food and Water Security sector, shared his professional journey.

"NEP 3.0 provided an invaluable platform for collaboration with experts from diverse fields, enhancing my understanding of national strategies for food and water security. The programme emphasised leadership, policy alignment, and cross-sector collaboration, all of which now inform my efforts at ADQ to address the UAE's strategic priorities."

Al Shehhi started his career as an engineer at the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), and later moved to the financial sector.

Today his focus is on driving sustainable growth within the UAE's food and agriculture ecosystem.

"Early in my career, I contributed to the region's first civil nuclear project, which demonstrated how visionary thinking could translate into a self-sustaining reality. This inspired me to work in critical sectors like food and water security - areas vital to our nation's future," he said.

He stressed that technology is revolutionising agriculture in the UAE by turning challenges into opportunities.

He noted that the UAE is focusing on water-efficient solutions to increase crop yields, diversify food sources and strengthen resilience against global supply chain disruptions, with the goal of becoming a global leader in food security by 2051.

"Agtech innovations like vertical farming and controlled environment agriculture are critical for overcoming the region's arid climate,"Al Shehhi said.

"Innovations like controlled environment agriculture and vertical farming are transforming the UAE's agricultural landscape. Controlled environment systems create ideal growing conditions year-round, while vertical farming maximises output in small spaces," he continued.

"Vertical farming and hydroponics optimise space and water usage while ensuring consistent fresh produce. Scaling these methods can significantly enhance local food production and reduce reliance on imports, contributing to greater food security."

Al Shehhi added that companies, like Abu Dhabi-based Al Dahra, have initiated large-scale desert projects, demonstrating potential for growth, resource reduction, as well as increased food production.

Regarding international collaboration, Al Shehhi highlighted the UAE's status as a global trade and innovation hub that offers opportunities to lead agtech advancements.

"Hosting international conferences, investing in research and development, and partnering with global innovators allow the UAE to drive collaboration and knowledge-sharing on a global scale," he said.

According to  Al Shehhi, sustainability plays a central role in the UAE's future food system.

The UAE's future food system prioritises sustainability, with technology supporting resource-efficient farming practices and renewable energy solutions.

Long-term investments in sustainable infrastructure and widespread adoption of AgTech ensure a resilient future food system, he added.

"The UAE offers a unique environment for innovation in agtech, supported by significant investments and a commitment to sustainability. For young professionals and entrepreneurs, this sector presents an incredible opportunity to shape a resilient food system and make a lasting impact on society and the planet."
