AMEINAH ALZEYOUDI (ABU DHABI)
In a humanitarian step that reflects the spirit of compassion during the blessed month of Ramadan, a group of charitable organisations has announced the launch of a campaign to distribute iftar meals at traffic stops along main roads in various areas of Abu Dhabi.
The initiative aims to provide assistance to travellers and service workers who may have difficulty reaching iftar locations on time. In the hours before iftar, many people are seen on the streets of Abu Dhabi, either heading home after a long day of work or travelling along highways.
This humanitarian initiative has been widely appreciated by citizens, who highlighted the move as an important step towards promoting social solidarity during the Holy Month and reflects the core values that connect community members, whether they are residents of the city or visitors.
Sultan Al-Shihe, Director of the Hifz Al-Naema Department, affiliated with Emirates Red Crescent, said: "We fully relied on volunteers from the Emirates Red Crescent, participants with us and the institutions collaborating with us during the iftar distribution process."
He noted that 1.5 million meals are required for the initiative to be distributed at gas stations, ports, airports, hospitals, traffic signals, and intersections during iftar time.
"At the national level, we distribute between 50,000 and 60,000 meals daily, although the numbers may vary. The first few days saw about 60,000 meals being distributed," Al-Shihe said.
He added: "The distribution of iftar meals at various locations around the city is part of the message of giving that we embrace during Ramadan. We strive to reach as many people as possible who may need support, whether they are passersby or workers in difficult circumstances. Our goal is to work together to lend a helping hand and remind everyone of the spirit of the Holy Month."
Shoug Mohammed, one of the volunteers in this initiative, said: "I am very proud to be part of this campaign. It gives us the opportunity to offer a helping hand to those in need, and it strengthens social solidarity in our community."
The campaign has been widely welcomed by motorists, who expressed their gratitude for the initiative.
"This campaign is truly wonderful, especially when you find yourself on the road and can't reach home in time for iftar. This meal is not just to meet our nutritional needs, but it also reminds us of the essence of Ramadan and the spirit of giving," a driver said.
