The Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) on Saturday organised the 29th edition of the annual "Can Collection Day," reinforcing the collective drive towards achieving a more sustainable environment.
The initiative is part of a series of environmental activities aimed at meeting the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalise the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.
Over the years, the Aluminum Can Collection Campaign has proven to be highly successful.
In 2024, the campaign achieved exceptional success by surpassing the goal of collecting 31,800kg of aluminum cans, gathering more than 31,851 kg, reflecting widespread public participation and active engagement in this initiative.
Every aluminum can collected and recycled contributes to reducing environmental impact, lowering carbon emissions, and saving energy, according to the organisers.
Shafiq Ahmed, an employee at the Emirates Environmental Group, said: "The initiative has gathered around 35,000kg of aluminum cans from participants in this annual event."
Since its inception in 1997, the EEG has collected over 438,843kg of aluminum cans, preventing 6,587 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, saving 99,874 million British thermal units (BTUs) of energy, and reducing landfill waste by 10,653 cubic metres, according to the EEG website.
