DUBAI (ALETIHAD)

Dubai Police seized 23 vehicles, whose drivers intentionally obscured or tampered their license plates using various methods to evade detection by enforcement devices and traffic cameras.

This attempt was made to avoid traffic violations and complicate the identification of registered plate numbers by traffic departments, according to a statement issued by the Police.

Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, emphasized that the Force employs advanced innovative technologies and a highly skilled team capable of detecting attempts to conceal or tamper with license plates.

He stressed that anyone who thinks they can evade the law through these tactics is mistaken.

He added that Dubai Police keep an eye on both internal and external roads to address these violations.

Al Mazrouei stated, “We have observed drivers using chemical substances to obscure their license plates, while others have bent their plates or applied stickers that hinder identification. We emphasized that such actions are traffic violations subject to legal penalties.”

Speeding over 190 kmph

Additionally, he mentioned the arrest of a young man featured in a viral social media video who was deliberately removing his vehicle's license plate while committing serious traffic offenses, including running a red light and speeding over 190kmph. “This individual was also engaged in reckless behaviour and performing dangerous stunts on the road.” Al Mazrouei continued, “Another driver was apprehended using a chemical spray to obscure part of their license plate, making it appear to have double digits.”

The Director of the General Department of Traffic confirmed that the vehicles have been impounded under Decree No. 30 of 2023 concerning vehicle impoundment, which can impose a fine of up to Dh50,000 for their release.

He emphasized that Dubai Police maintain a strict stance against individuals who manipulate the system, noting that such actions constitute a form of fraud, effectively transforming a traffic violation into a criminal offense.

Al Mazrouei urged community members to collaborate with the police by reporting these negative behaviours through the ‘Police Eye’ service available on the Dubai Police mobile application or by contacting the ‘We Are All Police’ helpline at 901.
