The Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) is committed to nurturing the next generation of STEM innovators in the UAE with a focus on early education, according to Dr. Ing. Mae Almansoori, Director of Research and Development Talent Enablement at ATRC.
In an interview with Aletihad on Wednesday on the sidelines of the World Government Summit in Dubai, she explained how ATRC is taking STEM education to the public with immersive activations across the UAE.
From February 10-16, shopping malls in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhanna are transformed into AI and robotics playgrounds, allowing children and families to experiment with robotics, AI and quantum technologies.
These activations are not only fun but serve as a way for ATRC to identify high-potential young students.
"We're targeting students under 10 years old to provide them with the right mentorship throughout their academic careers, ensuring we don't lose promising potential as they grow," Dr. Almansoori said.
Integrating STEM education in early childhood is crucial to nurturing genuine interest in the field and building a strong foundation for future learning, she explained.
ATRC's broader vision for education in the UAE takes into account the entire ecosystem - the student, the education system, the policies, mentorship and the environment - all integral to the growth of future STEM leaders, according to Dr. Almansoori.
Thanks to the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), high school and university students now have access to cutting-edge research centres and projects, providing them with real-world experiences.
ATRC's NextTech Programme offers outstanding Emirati STEM students the chance to pursue a master's or PhD at top global universities, collaborating with experts on innovative research projects while working as associate researchers at one of TII's 10 research centres.
ATRC is also working on creating advanced technology hubs across the country, bringing cutting-edge tech closer to communities in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and beyond.
With a focus on promoting advanced technologies across various fields such as robotics, renewable energy and quantum computing, Dr. Almansoori noted that ATRC's educational efforts tie into the broader national vision of the UAE toward a knowledge-based economy.
"In the UAE, we are fortunate to have leadership that not only supports us but is deeply involved in every step of the way. This support has enabled the UAE to take on a pioneering role in emerging advanced technology field like artificial intelligence," she added.
