Cybersecurity for autonomous systems, the future of air mobility and EVTOL aircraft, and improving supply chain resilience took centre stage at a panel session hosted by Rabdan Academy.

Titled “Management of Complex Systems: a BAE Systems Perspective”, the session brought together experts, researchers, students and representatives, discussing cutting-edge technologies in managing contemporary complex systems.

Led by Gabby Costigan, Group Managing Director of Business Development at BAE Systems, the session shed light on innovative strategies and advanced solutions to address the growing complexities and rapid advancements in modern systems across various sectors.

In an interview with Aletihad, Costigan explained that BAE Systems supports governments in defence, security, and space, using advanced technologies to enhance decision-making.

She noted that cybersecurity is crucial for managing autonomous systems, as they are vulnerable to electronic warfare and hacking.

“By working together, academia, government, and industry can solve real engineering problems,” Costigan added.

Dr. Kristian Alexander, Senior Fellow at the Rabdan Security and Defence Institute, told Aletihad that the intersection of defence systems and cybersecurity is becoming crucial in the GCC as AI and autonomous technologies grow.

“Cybersecurity has become a key pillar of national security strategies across the GCC. For instance, the UAE established the National Electronic Security Authority (NESA) to safeguard critical infrastructure, including military systems, from cyber threats. In 2023, the UAE repelled more than 50,000 cyberattacks daily,” Dr. Alexander said.

“The UAE’s strategic vision for defence innovation places it at the forefront of technological advancement in the region. By integrating cutting-edge technologies such as autonomous systems, drones, and artificial intelligence (AI) into its defence apparatus, the UAE has significantly enhanced its operational capabilities,” Dr. Alexander said.

He pointed out the UAE’s collaboration with global defence companies like Lockheed Martin and EDGE Group ensures seamless integration of systems.

“The UAE has taken significant steps to enhance its cyber resilience. The establishment of the UAE Cybersecurity Council reflects a strategic commitment to safeguarding critical infrastructure.”

He then pointed to the UAE’s Falcon Eye satellite surveillance system as an example of both technological advancement and the importance of cybersecurity:

“A pertinent case is the UAE’s Falcon Eye satellite surveillance system [smart system], which provides high-resolution imagery for defence and security purposes. While this system offers unprecedented situational awareness, it also requires robust cybersecurity protocols to prevent data breaches or manipulation. Continuous cybersecurity audits and the use of AI to detect and neutralise cyber threats in real-time are critical components of the UAE’s strategy.”

Dr. Alexander further discussed the role of emerging technologies like AI and blockchain in the future for managing complex security systems.

“Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain are poised to revolutionise the management of complex security systems, particularly in the Gulf region, where advanced digital infrastructure and regional security concerns drive innovation. These technologies offer transformative potential in enhancing efficiency, security, and resilience across multiple sectors, including defence, critical infrastructure, and cybersecurity,” he said.

Dr. Alexander praised Rabdan Academy for its tailored programmes, simulation training, and applied research, highlighting the role of Rabdan Security and Defence Institute (RSDI) in addressing security challenges, promoting regional cooperation, and developing Emirati talent in advanced defence technologies.

“Academia and research institutes like Rabdan Academy play a vital role in bridging the gap between theory and practice in managing complex defence and security systems in the MENA region. By fostering collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and practitioners, these institutions can turn theoretical insights into actionable strategies that address real-world challenges,” he added.
