SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)
Tadweer Group is taking part in the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW 2025) showcasing its advanced technology in waste management and its focus on community engagement and collaboration.
Speaking to Aletihad, Oliver Lawson, Media & Communication Advisor at Tadweer Group, said: "This is our most important event of the year, and it is really our opportunity to raise the profile of Tadweer Group and particularly our three strategic pillars, the three areas that we want to focus on. One is advanced technology and the opportunities to reduce waste from landfill through advanced technology. Second is partnerships and collaboration, and then the third is community engagement."
He noted that they aim to divert 80% of waste from landfills by 2030, which requires partnerships, collaboration, experts, investors, and technology.
The Group is investing in advanced waste-to-energy plants and exploring sustainable aviation fuel from waste, a collaboration with Masdar.
"Aviation is an industry that needs to decarbonise, and harnessing waste to create sustainable aviation fuel on a commercial scale could open huge opportunities for Tadweer Group and our aviation partners in the future," he elaborated.
Lawson said that the Group has launched its first Youth Council and Ambassador programme, focusing on young Emiratis to harness their talent, enhance their problem solving skills, and mould them as drivers of change.
"Another project being showcased here is our partnership with British company Levidian. They have a technology that turns methane into hydrogen and graphene. We are about to install this loop technology at a landfill for the first time globally, capturing methane gases from the landfill and turning them into hydrogen and graphene," he said
According to Lawson, Tadweer's waste-to-energy integration involves collecting waste, sorting it into streams, and converting non-recyclable materials into energy. This system will power 52,000 homes in Abu Dhabi and significantly reduce landfill waste.
He stressed the importance of reducing waste at the source and encouraged recycling and segregation through community recycling centres and reverse vending machines, noting that the public's role is essential in this regard.
Reflecting on the future, Lawson commented: "Our ambitions extend beyond Abu Dhabi. Our first step is to revolutionise waste management here, then across the UAE, the GCC, and internationally. We have recently announced a partnership with the government of Uzbekistan to build a waste-to-energy plant there. This is a fast-moving project, and we are helping them divert a significant portion of their waste."
Also speaking to Aletihad, Bruno-Frederic Baudouin, CEO of Kanadevia Inova, a global green tech company operating in waste to energy and renewable gas, discussed their partnership with Tadweer Group."The partnership with Tadweer Group is a fusion of industry expertise with government vision," he said, adding that the project will divert nearly 1 million tonnes of waste from landfills and generate 80 megawatts of electricity.
Baudouin also highlighted their world-first Ultra-Large Combustion technology, which offers increased efficiency and affordability. "This triggers the transition to a circular economy," he said.
Baudouin further stressed the importance of enhancing resource recovery and expanding sustainable waste management solutions across the region.
"We aim to eliminate landfills and support Abu Dhabi's Environment Vision," he said.
