ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)

The Emergencies, Crisis and Disaster Management Centre - Abu Dhabi (ADCMC), in partnership with the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, held technical meetings of the Integrated Nuclear Security Sustainability Plan of the International Atomic Energy Agency to discuss the development of a comprehensive nuclear security sustainability plan for the UAE.

The meetings, which spanned over four days in Abu Dhabi, brought together more than 20 experts and professionals from the country’s security sector to exchange their extensive expertise and knowledge in planning, developing, and implementing systems to ensure the sustainability of nuclear security in the UAE.

These technical meetings served as key components in Abu Dhabi’s efforts to support the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation and the International Atomic Energy Agency in maintaining and enhancing nuclear security through close collaboration with international partners.

The objective of the meetings was to strengthen and enhance nuclear security in the UAE by conducting a comprehensive review of the six functional areas in the Integrated Nuclear Security Sustainability Plan. It focused on evaluating previous achievements and implementing new initiatives to strengthen nuclear security, in addition to identifying further needs to advance these efforts.

His Excellency Dr Abdulla Hamrain Al Dhaheri, Executive Director of the Response and Recovery Sector at ADCMC, said: “A key component of the UAE’s national strategy to guarantee continued security and safety is strengthening nuclear security. As the UAE continues to strengthen its efforts in this vital field to preserve a secure and sustainable environment, hosting these important meetings demonstrates the country’s remarkable dedication to creating cutting-edge nuclear security measures that satisfy the highest international standards.”

His Excellency underlined that hosting these meetings reflects the UAE’s steadfast dedication to enhancing cooperation with the IAEA and other international partners. In order to enhance global nuclear security, guarantee safety and stability, and strengthen the collective capabilities of nations to successfully handle nuclear challenges, the UAE works to establish solid relationships based on collaboration and knowledge exchange.

His Excellency emphasised that ADCMC is essential to improving the emirate’s preparedness for handling crises, emergencies, and disasters. He underlined that the ADCMC is dedicated to promoting cooperation and creating an efficient emergency system that can handle any difficulties or crises, and that these meetings are an important strategic step toward improving national preparedness and coordinating efforts among all pertinent entities.

Fahed Al Blooshi, FANR's Director of Nuclear Security, said: “Through close collaboration with both national and global partners, FANR has been instrumental in guaranteeing the safe and secure use of nuclear and other radioactive materials in the UAE. It is crucial to host these meetings with IAEA experts to deepen collaboration with our partners and exchange information and experience on nuclear security.”

In addition to outlining a thorough path to improve nuclear security, the meetings focused on planning, creating, and implementing nuclear security systems. This involved creating the capabilities, policies, and strategies that foster international cooperation between member states and international organisations, facilitating the sharing of best practices, resources, and technology.

Building the infrastructure and human resources required to guarantee the long-term efficacy of security measures is a top priority of the Integrated Nuclear Security Sustainability Plan (INSSP). To prevent duplication of effort and promote a comprehensive strategy in addressing all challenges of nuclear security, it also sought to coordinate national and international efforts.

The ADCMC plays a key role in enhancing Abu Dhabi’s preparedness for emergencies, crises, and disasters. It develops effective policies, strategies, and plans for successful emergency, crisis, and disaster management, in collaboration with local entities, while ensuring effective coordination with its partners.
