A young Emirati woman, Lamya Alsaiqal, is hooked on fishing and is making waves in a traditionally male-dominated sport.

Fishing is not just a hobby for her, it’s a passion that takes her away from life’s pressures.

Alsaiqal told Aletihad: “I started fishing with my family and friends, then pursued it as a hobby. We progressed from fishing onshore to renting boats, improving our skills and gaining experience.

“Today we own our own fishing boats, actively compete in fishing tournaments and consistently achieving top rankings.”

Established in 2017, her Al Namos Ladies Fishing Team stands as the first and only women’s fishing team in the UAE.

Today the team consists of six members and have an impressive haul of eight awards, including:

·       2020 Second Place - Delma Marine Fishing Competition

·       2021 Third Place - The Dalma Kingfish Fishing Competition (Women’s Category)

·       2023 Second Place - Al Dhafra Grand Kingfish Championship (Women’s Category)

·       2024 Third Place - Al Dhafra Grand Kingfish Championship

Alsaiqal’s latest prize is winning the title of Best Lady Angler after setting a new record for catching the largest Mahi-mahi, weighing a whopping 19kg, during the Fujairah Offshore Fishing Tournament earlier this month.

Alsaiqal  said: “I feel accomplished and proud because I’m taking on significant and challenging tasks. However, because I love this sport, I enjoy every effort, cost and challenge.

“I know what I’m doing isn’t easy, but it’s fun and takes me to new horizons, leaving me feeling happy and refreshed afterwards.

She adds: “I’ve gained valuable lessons in patience, endurance and courage. Above all, I’ve come to understand the critical importance of ensuring everyone’s safety on the boat.”
