SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)

In a conversation with Aletihad, three fifth-year architecture students from the American University of Sharjah-Salama Alhammadi, Omar Darwish and Abdulla Abbas-discussed their thought-provoking pavilion at Abu Dhabi Art Fair 2024, "Material Rejects: Why Do Materials Die Young?"

Debuting on Saadiyat Island, the project reimagines construction waste by repurposing unused materials, particularly temporary scaffolding structures from ongoing projects.

"The inspiration came from the vast amounts of unused materials on Saadiyat Island," they said.

"Rather than viewing them as discarded waste, we wanted to reimagine them and give them new life. Temporary scaffolding structures, often overlooked, can convey powerful messages about sustainability."

Easier said than done. "The main challenges were sourcing and adapting discarded materials, particularly scaffolding facades that had deteriorated due to exposure," they said.

The structural integrity of the materials was assessed to ensure safety and functionality, while maintaining their natural state and achieving functional design.

The design process involved a lot of trial and error, they said, but they embraced the limitations of the materials.

This approach allowed them to create a structure that was both visually striking and practical.

"By repurposing scaffolding and other materials typically discarded or used temporarily, we extended their lifespan and minimised waste. We sourced materials directly from construction sites on Saadiyat Island, preserving their original form and reducing the need for processing," they added, stressing that sustainability was a consideration.

Their exhibit also reflects the UAE's rapid growth and its cultural values.

"The UAE is known for its dynamic development, and our pavilion celebrates that by repurposing materials commonly found on construction sites," they said.

With their artwork, the students are hoping to create a fresh perspective and inspire innovative and sustainable solutions for construction waste.

Building on the concept, they said: "We are eager to explore how sustainability, design innovation and practical realities intersect in urban spaces. The next step is scaling up our vision, creating immersive, transformative spaces that reflect the UAE's architectural narrative-a style that is uniquely ours, not based on international trends.

Dispensing advice to aspiring artists, they said: "Use readily available materials and avoid altering them too much, as this minimises environmental impact and cost.

"Respect the inherent qualities of materials, and you will create powerful, responsible designs that embody both simplicity and resourcefulness."
