ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)

In collaboration with the Centre for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (CMEIS) at the Asiatic Research Institute (ARI) of Korea University, the TRENDS Research & Advisory’s Korea office held an interactive session titled: "Deep Dive Seminar on Middle East Crisis". The session examined the potential effects of the ongoing Middle Eastern crisis on the economy and diplomatic strategies.

The seminar, guided by the expertise of three distinguished speakers, focused on three themes. The first session, led by Sung Il-Kwan from the Euro-MENA Institute, cantered on relations between Iran and Israel. His insightful paper on the outlook for the ongoing tension between Iran and Israel warned of the potential for escalating conflicts.

In the second session, Lee Kwon-Hyung from the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) discussed the economic risks facing South Korea, providing an analysis of the implications of the Middle East crisis for Korea’s economy, particularly concerning energy security and trade. The third session featured Kim Therg-Ill of CMEIS, who examined the role of Hezbollah and the Axis of Resistance, analysing their influence on Middle East events and regional stability.

The panel discussion, moderated by Park Hyun-do from the Euro-MENA Institute at Sogang University, was a pivotal part of the symposium. Prominent figures such as Ma Young-Sam, former South Korean Ambassador to Israel; Park Jun-Yong, former Ambassador to Saudi Arabia; Jang Ji-Hyang of the Asan Institute for Policy Studies; and Kim Jong-Do from CMEIS shared their insights on the complex nature of the Middle East crisis. Their diverse perspectives provided valuable insights on the geopolitical, economic, and security implications for South Korea.

The inaugural event of the TRENDS Korea office offered policymakers, academics, and the public an invaluable opportunity to better understand the Middle East’s complex challenges and opportunities. By examining the potential impacts on South Korea’s economy and foreign policy, the seminar highlighted the importance of proactive engagement and strategic planning in dealing with the Middle East’s uncertain future.
