SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)

Identifying the signs and symptoms of breast cancer is key in effective treatment, especially since they can be quite subtle and obvious, Dr. Seema Sen, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women & Children.

Speaking to Aletihad on the occasion of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked globally every October, Dr. Sen said that with a significant survival rate for early-stage breast cancer, early identification significantly improves treatment efficacy.

“A woman can feel just an area of thickening in the breast, or a small lump might appear. There could be a change in the size and shape of one or both breasts, retraction of the skin, or a dimple on the skin of the breast,” she said.

However, she warned that ignoring minor warning indicators might result in a sharp drop in survival rates.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer globally, with one out of eight women diagnosed in their lifetime, she said.

Community Support

She additionally stressed how community organisations can support patients and their families with breast cancer.

“In the UAE, the Ministry of Health and other health organisations are running national awareness campaigns.”

She reiterated how crucial these organisations are in providing financial assistance and other support for cancer diagnosis.

“There is a lot of work that community organisations can do, including connecting families concerned about hereditary risks with genetic counsellors,” she continued.

Dispelling Myths

Addressing widespread misunderstandings, Dr. Sen dispelled several myths regarding breast cancer, including the false belief that the disease can be caused by breast injuries.

Most breast cancer cases occur sporadically, she added, but a small percentage are genetically based.

“Another myth is that young women are immune from breast cancer,” she noted.

“Younger women, particularly those with BRCA gene mutations, are also at risk,” she said.

Furthermore, Dr. Sen underlined that most breast lumps are benign and stressed the significance of having a specialist examine them.

Advancements in Research

Considering recent developments, Dr. Sen mentioned that Danat Al Emarat is a breast cancer screening facility with certification.

She recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40, which in turn offers personalised risk evaluations based on personal medical records and family histories.

In order to improve diagnosis and treatment choices, she mentioned ongoing research into biomarkers, lifestyle factors, and the possibility of artificial intelligence in imaging.

It could significantly improve diagnostic skills by assisting in the identification of questionable regions that might need biopsies.

"There is a lot happening in the community, but locally, our advancement focuses on breast cancer awareness and early screening."

Self-awareness

Dr. Sen advised women to actively monitor their health. “Breast screening starts with self-awareness. Women should perform regular self-examinations. If they notice any changes, they should consult a doctor immediately.”
