The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the concepts of agricultural and food sustainability and building the capacity of the agricultural sector, both plant and animal, as well as food producers and traders on best agricultural and food practices.
On the occasion of World Food Day, which is celebrated every year on October 16, and this year's theme is "Right to 'foods' for a better life and a better future," ADAFSA stated that it is implementing numerous initiatives to support sustainable agricultural development and the use of modern agricultural technology.
This is achieved by encouraging farmers to adopt the latest technologies and agricultural practices that can reduce water consumption while improving the quality and efficiency of productivity.
This is particularly emphasised in greenhouse agriculture, aiming to achieve global leadership in food security, increase local production of crops and livestock, and ensure that all residents have access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food at all times.
ADAFSA is developing an integrated food security system that aligns with the National Food Security Strategy 2051, which aims to position the UAE as a global leader in food security based on innovation.
The authority also highlighted that the country's infrastructure services, such as roads, bridges, and logistics, play a crucial role in supporting food security.
Additionally, massive storage facilities like those in Khalifa Industrial City (KIZAD), silos, and large-scale food production factories contribute to the country's food security and offer protection during crises and emergencies.
In line with this year's theme, ADAFSA reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to providing safe and healthy food for the Abu Dhabi community.
This is achieved by adopting effective regulatory systems and comprehensive awareness programmes in agriculture and food based on international best practices and risk analysis principles, contributing to the well-being and safety of the community.
The authority emphasised its ongoing commitment to enhancing food safety culture in the community by intensifying control and awareness efforts and strengthening cooperation with local and international partners.
Moreover, ADAFSA seeks to adopt the latest technologies and innovations in food safety to ensure that consumers in Abu Dhabi have access to safe and healthy food that meets their nutritional needs.
By September 2024, ADAFSA had carried out 55,299 inspections of food establishments, 26,168 inspections of farms and agricultural facilities, and 14,715 inspections of animal facilities.
Additionally, 1,073,732 tonnes of food have been imported through the emirate's ports since the beginning of 2024.
One of ADAFSA's key proactive initiatives was the recent launch of the "Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Security Data Platform," an important step towards driving innovation in food security.
This advanced digital platform provides access to reliable data, supporting policymakers and researchers in developing innovative solutions that enhance the effectiveness of the agricultural and food sectors in the emirate.
In collaboration with ADNEC Group and the Food and Beverage Manufacturers Group, ADAFSA is also preparing to organise the World Food Week from November 26-28, 2024 at ADNEC, Abu Dhabi.
The event will see significant international participation from decision-makers and leading global companies in the sector.
World Food Week will include several exhibitions and specialised conferences, as well as the launch of the first edition of the Global Food Security Summit.
The event will showcase the latest global technologies in agriculture and food production.
