President Surangel Whipps Jr. of the Republic of Palau has commended the leadership role played by the UAE in combating climate change.

In statements to Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the 10th World Green Economy Summit (WGES) in Dubai, President Surangel Whipps said the UAE has demonstrated strong commitment to addressing climate change through its investments in green technology and its support for the transition to a green economy.

He emphasised the importance of collaborating with the UAE and benefiting from its experience and innovations in the field of clean energy to tackle climate challenges. He highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change on small island states like Palau despite their minimal contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. He stressed the urgent need for action.

President Surangel urged developed nations to offer not just loans but also grants to help developing countries transition to a green economy.

He explained that major industrialised countries must take responsibility for providing support, noting that countries like Palau should not bear the brunt of climate change impacts caused by major emitters.
