AMNA AL KETBI (DUBAI)

On September 25, 2019, the UAE celebrated a historic milestone in space exploration as Hazza Al Mansoori became the first Emirati and Arab astronaut to reach the International Space Station (ISS). This achievement was a significant triumph not only for the UAE, but for the entire Arab world. Five years on, the UAE continues to build on this success, looking forward to a brighter future in space exploration.

Importance of Achievement

Al Mansoori’s journey began with the launch of the Soyuz MS-15 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, alongside an international crew. This mission was a testament to the UAE’s growing capabilities in contributing to significant scientific endeavours. During his time at the ISS, Al Mansoori conducted various scientific experiments on the effects of microgravity on the human body and engaged with Arab students to promote space sciences.

Scientific Experiments

During his eight-day mission, Al Mansoori participated in over 16 scientific experiments in collaboration with NASA, Roscosmos, and the European Space Agency. These experiments, which studied the effects of space on the human body, are crucial for future space travel plans. The mission also included experiments conducted on Earth by UAE schools, guided by Al Mansoori, as part of the Space Science Research Programme launched by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC).

Communication Sessions

Al Mansoori held several video and radio sessions with students from various Emirates, answering questions about life aboard the ISS. He recorded the first guided video tour in Arabic of the ISS, explaining its components and daily life in space.

Short Videos

Al Mansoori documented life aboard the ISS through short videos and kept a daily diary, sharing Emirati customs and traditions with his fellow astronauts. He introduced them to three Emirati dishes prepared by the Russian Space Food Laboratory. He also read two children’s stories, becoming the first Arab astronaut to record stories for children aboard the ISS, aiming to inspire future generations. He sent several video clips and photos of Earth, including images of the UAE from space, which captured various Arab countries in North Africa, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, including Mecca.

Daily Communication

Al Mansoori communicated twice daily with the ground station at the MBRSC in Dubai to discuss his schedule and tasks. His mission was part of the UAE Astronaut Programme, overseen by the MBRSC, which prepares national cadres for manned space flights and contributes to international scientific research, to develop solutions for numerous challenges that help improve life on Earth.

Impact on Youth

Al Mansoori’s journey has significantly impacted Emirati and Arab youth, symbolising hope and inspiration in science and technology. After returning to Earth, he participated in numerous educational events, emphasising the importance of pursuing ambitions and working hard to achieve goals.
