Marwa Alamri: Harnessing ADHD as a Strength
Marwa Alamri, a 33-year-old student at 42 Abu Dhabi, has turned her personal challenges into a catalyst for success. Diagnosed with ADHD in childhood, Alamri struggled with focus and traditional learning methods, compounded by an injury that affected her life for nearly five years. However, her journey took a transformative turn upon joining 42 Abu Dhabi, which provided her with the flexibility she needed.
"The self-paced, peer-to-peer model [at 42 Abu Dhabi] allowed me to learn in a way that suits my unique needs, rather than forcing me to conform to a traditional structure. I could explore topics deeply, take my time with challenging concepts, and collaborate with others who shared my passion," Alamri explained. This approach not only improved her focus but also fostered a sense of confidence and discipline.
She now views her ADHD as a strength rather than a limitation, leveraging her unique thinking patterns to excel in coding. Alamri's advice to others facing similar challenges is to embrace learning environments that accommodate their needs.
"Find what works for you and lean into it. Surround yourself with a supportive community that understands your journey and remember that your differences are what make you unique. Embrace them, and never stop believing in your potential to achieve great things."
Her future goals include pursuing a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, advancing to a doctoral programme, and continually developing her expertise in the field. On Emirati Women's Day, Alamri offers words of encouragement to Emirati women who are interested in pursuing a career in coding or technology. "Embrace your unique qualities and never let challenges define your limits. Technology and coding are fields where creativity, persistence, and innovation thrive, and your individual perspective is a valuable asset," she said.
"Remember, every challenge you face is an opportunity to learn something new about yourself and the world of technology."
