DUBAI (ALETIHAD)

A student died, and 11 others were injured when a vehicle swerved off and overturned on Hatta-Lahbab Road in Dubai on Tuesday, according to police.

Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Acting Commandant Assistant for Operations Affairs, said: "Initial findings suggest the accident was caused by speeding, negligence, and lack of attention on the driver's part. This led to a loss of control, a sudden swerve, and a collision with a metal barrier, ultimately causing the vehicle to overturn off the road into a sandy area. The student lost their life, while the others were injured and transferred to hospital for treatment."

Maj. Gen. Al Mazrouei indicated that following the report, specialised General Department of Traffic teams swiftly responded to the accident scene. "Experts from the Traffic Accidents Section were dispatched to gather precise evidence and determine the root causes. Traffic patrols managed the flow of vehicles, secured the accident site, ensured access for ambulances, and implemented necessary measures."

Maj. Gen. Al Mazrouei stressed that speeding, sudden manoeuvres, and driver negligence are significant contributors to accidents, urging all drivers to exercise caution, get rest before driving, avoid distractions, and prioritise safety to prevent such tragic incidents.

Commenting on the incident, Major General Expert Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Acting Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, emphasised the importance of parents carefully selecting drivers with the necessary skills and a solid commitment to road safety. He noted that it is crucial to ensure the safe transportation of students to and from school.

Maj. Gen. Al Mansouri cautioned about the risks of driving when feeling extremely tired and exhausted, asserting that fatigue is a critical factor that impacts the ability to drive safely. He highlighted that driver fatigue during long work hours diminishes focus and impairs reaction speed due to exhaustion, emphasising the importance of not overloading the vehicle beyond its capacity.
