HALA AL KHAYAT (ABU DHABI)

The Abu Dhabi City Municipality (ADM) announced a tender for consultancy services to supervise the demolition and removal of public eyesores in the city. ADM emphasised the importance for consultants and contractors in the demolition field to adhere to environmental, health, and safety standards during all demolition activities. Meticulous planning and systematic procedures to minimise the impact on both the community and the environment should always be followed.

ADM called for the implementation of corrective measures for neglected or abandoned buildings, urging collaboration with relevant authorities to resolve and address building conditions. The municipality conducts regular inspection campaigns at construction, demolition, and building sites to emphasise the importance of complying with health, safety, and environmental requirements.

During these inspections, companies’ adherence to all required conditions is verified. These conditions include obtaining a demolition permit from the relevant authorities, properly securing the site to prevent debris from falling on neighbouring buildings and passersby, providing firefighting equipment, and training site workers on its use.

Additionally, technicians and equipment operators must be trained, noise and dust levels must be measured, and appropriate preventive measures must be implemented. Proper handling, removal, and disposal of waste at demolition sites, along with spraying insecticides to prevent pest spread, are also highlighted to ensure site cleanliness and worker safety.

Demolition companies must have emergency plans in place for immediate response to accidents, aiming to mitigate the negative effects on the environment, workers’ health and safety, and public and private property.

ADM expressed strong confidence in demolition companies and contractors adhering to established standards and requirements. It stressed the need for primary supervision by company officials in accordance with Law No. (16) of 2009 amending Law No. (4) of 1983 on construction regulation, and Law No. (2) of 2012 on the preservation of public appearance, health, and public tranquillity.
