The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has announced that the bicycle paths network on Abu Dhabi Island now spans 1,266 kilometres, with ongoing projects expected to be completed by 2028.
The DMT told Aletihad that the bicycle paths network project aims to enhance urban connectivity and sustainability.
By expanding the bicycle network, the project is set to improve urban mobility, quality of life, safety, and accessibility, making cycling a preferred mode of transportation for all ages and categories.
Currently, the DMT is implementing several bicycle and pedestrian paths along Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Street, Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed the First Street, and Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Street.
These efforts are designed to encourage cycling and enhance quality of life standards.
The emirate is committed to providing safe bicycle paths and expanding sports and recreational facilities to meet global standards, promoting a healthy lifestyle within the community.
The DMT has launched one of the region’s most prominent cycling strategies, implementing a set of requirements and regulations to support safe cycling and raising public awareness about adopting cycling as a mode of transportation, beyond just recreation and sports.
The Integrated Transport Centre’s Abu Dhabi for Mobility works closely with Abu Dhabi Police, government partners, and the private sector to develop more advanced specifications for driver and road user safety.
It also investments in cycling infrastructure include providing numerous safe and designated cycling paths, which are well-received by the community and enhance Abu Dhabi’s reputation in the sport.
The Abu Dhabi Government’s Bike Abu Dhabi initiative was launched as a new enabling platform designed to enhance the vibrant cycling community throughout the emirate, improving the infrastructure of cycling projects, including expanding the bicycle network in the emirate, solidifying its global position in the field of cycling.
It also focused awareness on biking as an activity that combines mobility, health, recreation, and sports.
