SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)

With over two decades of experience in cybersecurity, Jassem Khadim, a security system engineer and certified cybersecurity specialist, has bridged his early career as a TV presenter with his passion for protecting digital domains.

Formerly a children’s show host at Dubai TV, Khadim’s transition into cybersecurity was driven by his academic background in computer science in the UK and his dedication to protecting networks and information.

This was accomplished by completing approximately 42 courses in security and computer-related fields.

Currently, he advocates for cybersecurity awareness through diverse platforms, collaborates with organisations in cybersecurity education, engages in awareness campaigns, workshops, training sessions, and delivers expert insights through conferences and webinars.

In an interview with Altetihad, he highlighted the importance of cybersecurity awareness. “Focusing on cybersecurity awareness is essential because individuals are often the first line of defence against cyber threats. Educating people about the risks and how to protect themselves can significantly reduce the likelihood of successful cyber-attacks. Awareness empowers individuals to make informed decisions and adopt safe practices online,” Khadim said.

He stressed that individuals are the first line of defence in cybersecurity as many cyber attacks target human behaviour, such as through phishing scams and social engineering.

“By educating and training individuals to recognise and respond to threats, we can prevent many attacks from succeeding. People’s actions and awareness play a crucial role in maintaining overall security,” he continued.

According to Khadim, reaching a wider audience involves using multiple platforms, customising messages, and partnering with influencers and organisations.
The cybersecurity specialist identified phishing, malware, ransomware, social engineering, data breaches, and identity theft as major threats.

Phishing involves deceptive emails; malware damages or steals data; ransomware encrypts data; social engineering manipulates individuals into divulging confidential information; data breaches result from weak security measures; and identity theft involves fraudulent acquisition and use of personal information.

He noted that social media platforms take the lead in engaging audiences by sharing cybersecurity tips, updates, and educational content.

Features like Q&A sessions and polls engage users, addressing concerns and advancing cybersecurity awareness.

He also delved into major challenges he encountered while promoting cybersecurity awareness. “One of the main challenges is overcoming widespread complacency and a lack of understanding about cyber threats. Many people believe they are not targets or that basic security measures are enough. Additionally, the rapid evolution of cyber threats necessitates continuous updates to educational content, which can be resource-intensive. Engaging a diverse audience with varying levels of technical expertise also poses a challenge,” Khadim said.

He asserted that individuals must understand their cybersecurity rights and duties, securing devices using strong passwords, and being alert against threats.

He recommends using unique passwords, two-factor authentication, regular software updates, cautious email use, reputable security software, and regular data backups.

Khadim adapts easy-to-adapt methods and simplifies complex cybersecurity concepts to reach a wider public.

“To simplify complex cybersecurity concepts, I use analogies and real-life examples that people can relate to. Visual aids, such as infographics and videos, help break down complicated information into digestible parts. Interactive methods, like quizzes and hands-on workshops, also make learning more engaging and effective,” he added. As a cybersecurity expert, Khadim is on the lookout for emerging threats and keenly follows industry developments.

“I stay updated on cybersecurity trends and threats by following industry news, participating in professional forums, and attending conferences and seminars. I also take online courses and certifications to continually enhance my knowledge. Networking with other professionals in the field helps exchange insights and stay informed about the latest developments,” he said.

Khadim intends to broaden the educational outreach in the cybersecurity sector and develop extensive training programmes. Moreover, he plans to partner with international bodies to facilitate a safer digital environment for all.
