Brigadier General Saeed Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Federal Anti-Narcotics General Directorate at the Ministry of Interior, highlighted the UAE's national efforts and its pioneering experience in combating drugs and psychotropic substances. Speaking on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Al Suwaidi emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing this societal menace.
The Ministry of Interior actively participates in this global awareness day, recognising it as an opportunity to underscore the significance of collective action. Drug abuse poses a broad threat to communities and individual health and safety, making it crucial for everyone to play a role in its prevention.
The UAE stands out as a leader in drug control, thanks to its National Anti-Narcotics Charter, Al Suwaidi told Aletihad, adding that the plan is implemented through an integrated system of partners and relevant entities under the UAE Anti-Narcotic Council. By bringing together federal, local, and governmental bodies, the council ensures a coordinated approach to drug control.
Pioneering initiatives reflect the UAE government's commitment to achieving its objectives. With a vision of the wise leadership, the country continues to develop mechanisms and awareness programmes tailored to its society, following global standards. The Siraj National Anti-Drug Programme exemplifies these efforts, contributing to safer communities.
Al Suwaidi emphasised the importance of the "Mukafih" service, which offers confidential consultations via a toll-free number (80044). This service empowers parents to detect drug use and early addiction cases within the family environment. He commended the dedicated efforts of anti-narcotics personnel in combating drug gangs and traffickers, urging parents to raise awareness among their children about the dangers of drugs and to intensify supervision.
Furthermore, Al Suwaidi highlighted the UAE's commitment to achieving global leadership in drug control. Collaborating with relevant governmental, local, and international bodies, the country aims to apprehend traffickers and prevent toxins from reaching the community. The UAE has achieved significant milestones in preventing drug risks through an integrated operational system, proactive measures, and adherence to international agreements.
Efforts to enhance workforce skills and raise community awareness continue, with initiatives, programmes, and events contributing to the fight against drug-related issues, he said, adding that the UAE remains steadfast in its commitment to safety, prevention, and community security as part of its vision for a better future. Al Suwaidi underscored the ongoing efforts to combat the drug scourge.
According to the Ministry of Interior's statistics for 2023, a total of 8,300 reports were received, with 11,988 accused individuals. The ministry's success in curbing smuggling and trafficking is attributed to a capable and qualified system, as well as regional and international cooperation with counterpart agencies across various countries. Additionally, 2,397 electronic platforms promoting drugs were blocked during this period.
The UAE has also prioritised strengthening its international relations in the fight against drug promotion and trafficking. In 2023, cooperation extended to more than 30 countries, involving joint efforts in cases, follow-ups, and information sharing related to drug smuggling and trafficking. Outside the country, a total of 4,481 kilogrammes of narcotics were seized based on information provided by the UAE.
The UAE, represented by the Ministry of Interior, participates in the global observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, held annually on June 26. This occasion highlights countries' collective efforts to combat drug-related issues, which pose significant risks to global security and community safety. It also serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drugs on health and society.
Under the theme "My Family. My True Wealth", the Ministry of Interior emphasises the country's commitment to combating drugs and raising awareness about their risks and means of proliferation. The focus on families as the first line of defence for children, with diverse activities and educational programmes organised by the ministry and public police leadership, aims to enhance community awareness of drug dangers and addiction, addressing security, economic, social, and health aspects.
The UAE has achieved significant milestones in combating drug promotion, smuggling, and use. Pioneering policies, advanced technologies, and a qualified national cadre contribute to safeguarding community security. The UAE, in collaborating with international drug control organisations and entities, creates safer, drug-free communities worldwide.
