The UAE emphasised the important role of youth in combatting hate speech and extremism, calling for adopting gender-responsive approaches to protect women and girls from hate crimes.

During a high-level event on investing in the power of youth to address these pressing issues, His Excellency Mohamed Abushahab, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN, praised the progress made since the adoption of UN Resolution 2686, which links hate speech and intolerance to global conflicts.

However, he admitted that “while significant strides have been made, much more remains to be done”.

Abushahab highlighted three primary strategies: continuous monitoring and reporting of hate speech and extremism, investing in youth education, and adopting gender-responsive approaches to protect women and girls from hate crimes.

“We must invest in young people’s education. Fostering their engagement, and supporting their initiatives, we can harness their potential to build a more inclusive and tolerant world”, he said.

The Ambassador stressed the importance of addressing hate speech in a “gender-responsive” manner, calling for the implementation of “adequate mechanisms to better protect women and girls from these crimes”.
