RABI HAMAMSAH (ABU DHABI)

Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) held its third and largest graduation ceremony for more than 100 students from the Class of 2024 at the Abu Dhabi Energy Centre on Thursday.

The historic graduation, which also marked the university’s 5th anniversary, witnessed the graduation of MBZUAI’s first three PhD graduates in Machine Learning, along with 98 master's graduates in Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing.

The graduation ceremony was attended by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and the Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.

During the ceremony, His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed congratulated the graduates on their success, and honoured a number of the PhD and master's graduates.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, Aletihad spoke with graduates Leena Binkuwair and Joseph Sanji, who expressed their happiness to be among the university’s first graduates to receive a master’s degree in AI.

The first batch of PhD students from MBZUAI, alongside the master’s graduates, are expected to make a significant impact on society and the industrial sector in the future.

In preparation for their theses, the students conducted research in several new areas that could lead to tangible change in vital sectors from healthcare to transportation and finance.

Ambitious Futures

MBZUAI provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to understand the scope of their responsibilities and explore available opportunities, paving the way to map a future where AI serves humanity through creativity, empathy, and consistent ethical standards, according to the two graduates.

Both graduates that spoke with Aletihad decided to stay in the UAE after graduation to become part of the new generation of talent in the AI field.

“I have already got a job offer from MBZUAI. I will stay in the UAE and work on passing the knowledge I learned as well as serve the UAE and its people in AI and its applications,” Sanji told Aletihad.

Binkuwair, an Emirati graduate, noted that she is looking for a job that fulfils her ambition in AI and enables her to serve her country and humanity.

“We have a wise leadership, and we are lucky and blessed by its directives. I am an example of being blessed by this opportunity to finish a master’s degree in AI at MBZUAI, where I have been provided with all support needed for me to succeed,” Binkuwair said.

The Effectiveness of AI

Joseph Sanji worked on research in healthcare to achieve a degree in machine learning.

His research focused on techniques to improve machine learning algorithms without affecting their performance.

"I found many aspects of machine learning interesting because if they’re not addressed now, it could have a negative impact on many sectors, including healthcare, transportation, logistics, and agriculture, especially in remote areas. I believe that AI’s benefits must be available to everyone,’’ he said.

Sanji focused on machine learning techniques known as pair-learning and multi-example learning.

“Paired learning can be useful in many applications, such as detection of rare diseases, fraud prevention, and in information retrieval and classification, while multi-sample learning can help in drug discovery, image classification and text classification, among others,” he added.

He noted that in the future, he wants to continue working on addressing the challenges of machine learning at the theoretical level, and he would like to continue his research work at MBZUAI.

3D Image Generation

Leena Binkuwair studied 3D image generation and modelling to utilise AI to develop the future of research.

“All research projects we did during our study at MBUZAI led to new results that could help in finding solutions for the problems and challenges we face,” she told Aletihad.

“MBUZAI is a genuine sign of the country’s willingness to have Emirati students with AI skills, as our country is a pioneer in AI applications. MBZUAI is just one example of many showing the UAE’s keenness to be a leader in this field,” Binkuwair added.
