“Sports fanaticism” fuelled by some presenters and media outlets and the support it evokes among many fans dominated a session on the last day of the Arab Media Forum 2024 in Dubai.
Titled “Who is behind sports fanaticism: the media or the fans?” and moderated by Hassan Habib, TV Presenter and Deputy Manager at Dubai Sport Channels, the session featured Ahmed Shobier, a media personality, and Lutfi Alzoabi, a presenter at Al Mashhad Media.
The speakers stressed that media presenters must maintain objectivity and impartiality when discussing events, respecting the viewers’ perspectives and steering clear of bias.
They noted that this fanaticism is a significant issue in sports media, highlighting how analysts often have their own agendas favouring certain clubs and teams. They asserted that it is essential to maintain professionalism and respect for the company and audience, even if they have loyalty to different clubs.
The responsibility for fanaticism is shared among fans, media, and management. While the media bears more responsibility than fans, management also plays a role, according to the speakers.
Shobier discussed the shift towards content creation, noting that many media professionals lack clear boundaries. He stressed that their role is to produce content that resonates with viewers without crossing red lines. Shobier proposed a media charter to be signed by all TV and radio personnel, further extending to social media platforms.
Talking to Aletihad, Alzoabi said: “Sports fanaticism that we discussed today undeniably exists. It is prevalent among all individuals. There is no one devoid of fanaticism, no one without a team allegiance, and no one lacking inclinations. Neutrality in the media and in sports enthusiasm simply does not exist.”
“Even if you support a team passionately, it is acceptable as long as you remain composed and refrain from becoming agitated or contentious, especially when engaging with rival supporters. As media representatives, you can express your support for your team with enthusiasm, and jubilation in victory, as well as disappointment in defeat. However, you must avoid provoking the audience excessively. While it may be challenging, maintaining a balanced perspective is essential in sports analysis, ensuring that you approach discussions about sports teams from a realistic standpoint.”
