MAYS IBRAHIM (ABU DHABI)
The recognition endowed by the Abu Dhabi Awards is a testament to the UAE’s pronounced commitment to advancing disability rights, putting multiple sclerosis (MS) on a “national spotlight” and inspiring hope for a world free from the disease, said Dr. Ahmed Osman Shatila, one of the eight honourees, receiving the accolades presented by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for their contributions to UAE society.
Dr. Shatila is a consultant neurologist at Sheikh ShakhboutMedical City (SSMC) with over 17 years of experience.
He was lauded for his unwavering dedication and altruism, as well as his pivotal role in establishing SSMC’s Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Clinic.
Reflecting upon the moment he received the award from President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Dr. Shatila noted that he was “at a loss for words”.
He expressed humility in knowing that his efforts have resonated with both his patients and the wider community in the UAE.
“It’s hard to put into words just how honoured and grateful I am … You think you’re just doing your job; you’re doing what you’re supposed to do, but to know that my patients or the people I care for appreciate that was immensely humbling,” Dr. Shatila told Aletihad.
He further emphasised the importance of the award in elevating the visibility of MS.
“This award has put MS on a national spotlight, in a way advocating for increased research, awareness, funding, and accessibility … it is an opportunity and a reminder that we can and must do more for MS patients and people with disabilities, who have always been high on the agenda of the UAE”.
Dr. Shatila’s service extends beyond the clinic walls; battling MS himself, and now requiring a wheelchair, he has made it his life’s mission to provide exceptional care for his patients and advocate for their rights. His tireless efforts have touched thousands of lives affected by MS and disabilities in the UAE, as he actively engages in dispelling misconceptions surrounding MS and empowering individuals to lead fulfilling lives despite their diagnosis.
Through diverse initiatives such as art therapy sessions and educational workshops, Dr. Shatila fosters a supportive environment where patients and their families find solace and community.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Shatila is a respected figure in neurology, with a prolific publication record and research contributions.
His commitment to advancing understanding of neurological conditions reflects his dedication to excellence in patient care and advocacy.
As the UAE continues to make progress in disability rights and awareness, Dr. Shatila emphasises the importance of ongoing awareness efforts. He believes that raising awareness is crucial for both individuals living with MS and the wider public. With initiatives like the Abu Dhabi Awards, Dr. Shatila envisions a future where individuals with disabilities are fully empowered to contribute to society.
“Raising awareness is essential because it empowers individuals to live their lives to the fullest,” Dr. Shatila affirmed.
“By dispelling myths, reducing stigmas, and providing accurate information, we can offer hope and enable individuals to make informed decisions about their health and future.”
Dr. Shatila earned his Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biology from Wayne State University in the United States, followed by his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the same institution.
He completed his residency and neurophysiology fellowship at the Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University.
