A team of researchers at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has unveiled a real-time autonomous malaria diagnosis app to combat the mosquito-borne disease.

This cutting-edge application, developed by experts including Dr. Mohammad Yaqub, an associate professor specialising in computer vision at MBZUAI, promises to revolutionise healthcare access, particularly in regions with limited resources.

On the sidelines of the World Future Energy Summit 2024, hosted by Masdar at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), Yaqub shared insights into the project, emphasising its potential impact on countries like Indonesia and India, where malaria remains a pressing issue amid resource constraints.

"Through a simple process involving microscopic examination of blood samples, followed by image capture and analysis using the app, patients can swiftly determine their malaria status and receive tailored treatment guidance.

This streamlined approach eliminates the need for extensive travel and enables timely intervention, crucial for containing the spread of the disease," he told Aletihad.
