MAYS IBRAHIM (ABU DHABI)

On Mother’s Day, annually observed on March 21, the UAE pays homage to the nurturing souls who play an invaluable role in Emirati society, shaping lives with their enduring love and boundless sacrifices.

The cherished occasion is marked by heartfelt gatherings and intimate moments to celebrate mothers whose love knows no bounds. It’s that special time of year when children shower their mothers with affectionate gestures, such as carefully chosen flowers and handwritten notes expressing gratitude.
Mother’s Day in the UAE is a testament to the profound respect and admiration Emiratis hold for the women, who embody strength, compassion, and resilience.

UAE Leadership’s Support and RecognitionThe support of the wise leadership has contributed to harnessing the capabilities of the Emirati mother, allowing her to excel and succeed on all levels.
Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Mother of the Nation, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, played a pivotal role in empowering and honouring Emirati mothers, acknowledging their integral roles in weaving the fabric of society.
In the UAE, Mother’s Day is a reflection of the nation’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

This is evidenced in various government initiatives that aim to ensure that Emirati mothers receive the support they deserve.

The establishment of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood in 2003 constitutes a qualitative leap in the pathway towards supporting mothers and children in the Emirates.
Since its founding, the UAE has actively sought cooperation and engagement with regional and international organisations, including the World Family Organisation (WFO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Arab Women’s Organisation (AWO).

The introduction of the Fatima bint Mubarak Motherhood and Childhood Award in 2016, reflects the UAE’s commitment to addressing local and global issues related to motherhood and childhood, in addition to encouraging further studies and research in these areas. In 2022, the award expanded to international recognition.

The UAE adopted the National Strategy for Motherhood and Childhood 2017-2021, which promotes the right of children and mother to comprehensive care within a sustainable, healthy environment.
In March 2018, Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak directed the development of the “UAE mother, child and youth friendly” strategy, aiming to empower children, youth and mothers in the country, irrespective of nationality, race, language and religion.

In 2020, Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak established an academic research centre focused on motherhood and childhood research. This initiative aligns with the goals of the UAE Vision 2021 and the UAE Centennial 2071 regarding the development of motherhood and childhood.
