RABI HAMAMSAH (ABU DHABI)
As the holy month of Ramadan begins, many questions regarding exercising during fasting pop up, whether it has a positive or negative effect, or when is the best time to work out, and what types of exercising are preferable, among others.
In an interview with Aletihad, Saif Al Qalawi, a fitness trainer, noted that fasting has many benefits for health.
Similarly, exercising in the holy month of Ramadan is also very important ‘’for health, but we must differentiate here between the type of sport practised in terms of the physical intensity and the timing of the exercise’’.
Al Qalawi said that a workout involving very high physical intensity must be practiced after Iftar (the fast-breaking meal at sunset) in about three hours.
“During fasting, it is preferable to practise a kind of sport with low or medium physical intensity, such as walking or jogging, with a pulse rate not exceeding 70%. To calculate the pulse rate, you must first calculate the maximum pulse rate for a person by the equation subtracting the number of years of life from the number 220, then multiply by 70% to calculate your target pulse rate,” he explained.
