The Abu Dhabi Police (ADP) held an awareness-raising session for female students of Al Maali Model School in Al Ain about the dangers of cybercrime and ways to protect themselves against it. These include blackmail, abuse through social media sites, identity theft, and electronic plagiarism.

Director of the Computer Emergency Response Branch in the Information Security Department, Captain Salem Khalfan Al Nuaimi, briefed students on the “Cyber Risks of Social Media Sites.” He stressed that ADP prioritises educating students on such topics to enhance their awareness of information security policies and personal cyber protection, in addition to ways to deal with phishing methods, suspicious mail, and exchanging information. He pointed out that hackers usually create fake accounts to lure users to reveal personal details, or participate in harmful activities, threatening them to reveal their private information, photos, and videos unless money is paid. Al Nuaimi also warned of the danger of suspicious advertisements, noting that clicking on them could harm devices.

Students took part in practical exercises that enabled them to secure their accounts on social media sites against cybercrime, hacking, and fraud.

Director of the Security Assurance Branch in the Information Security Department, Captain Khaled Ahmed Al Mazrouei, offered tips and instructions to enhance security on social media sites. The most prominent of these were installing an anti-malware programme on the computer, conducting regular scans, and using a strong password for the emails, which should be changed regularly.

He stressed that users must make sure links are safe before clicking on them and always keep their personal information hidden. He pointed out the dangers of sharing details relating to bank accounts, credit cards, phone numbers, and locations.

In addition to students, the event was attended by the school principal, Aisha Abdullah Al Nuaimi, and some faculty members and administrative staff.
