Approximately 64% of the UAE’s operational organic farms are based in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, updated data from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCE) revealed. Of the UAE’s total 74 organic farms operating in 2023, 47 farms were located in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, while 16 farms were based in the Emirate of Sharjah, 4 farms in the Emirate of Dubai, 3 in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain, and 2 farms each in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah and the Emirate of Fujairah.
According to the MoCCE, the produce from UAE’s organic farms is characterised by its high quality, nutrient density, lack of toxic substances that result from pesticide accumulation, and environmentally friendly production and manufacturing processes.
The benefits of organic farming include environmental preservation through reduced water pollution and a reduced use of non-renewable energy sources. These farms are also responsible for absorbing a large quantity of carbon, in addition to their key role in providing healthy food free from antibiotics and pesticides.
Organic farming is defined as an agricultural system that relies on the use of natural materials instead of chemical fertilisers, pesticides, and health-hazardous substances. Organic farms do not allow for the use of genetically modified organisms or preservatives in manufacturing, processing, or packaging, so the food reaches the consumer in its most natural state.
Organic farming practices also include ensuring the continued fertility of the soil by adding organic materials, preserving the natural cycles of nutrients, protecting agricultural crops from insects and diseases by following integrated farming management, and reducing the use of non-renewable resources.
To be certified as an organic farm, agricultural producers must undergo a transition period from chemical to organic farming, followed by inspection and certification processes for production sites, to ensure that all standards set for organic products are adhered to in order to guarantee the rights of producers and consumers, according to the MoCCE.
Supporting FarmersThe ministry affirmed that it continues to support the UAE’s farmers in implementation of the country’s strategy to encourage diversified national food production and preserve the local agricultural sector in line with sustainable development. The MoCCE also encourages the adoption of modern, environmentally friendly agricultural practices, such as organic and hydroponic farming.
Based on the UAE leadership’s vision, which considers food security to be a national security issue and a propeller of economic development, the MoCCE has taken several important strategic steps in recent year, including introducing more technology to the local agriculture sector and enhancing the sector’s role in narrowing the food gap. The ministry has also worked to combat food loss and waste through the “Nima” initiative and enhance food security by increasing production in local farms.
Agricultural Plans The ministry has developed a number of plans to further food security, including the continued development of legislation and services for the agriculture sector, such as the National Food Security Strategy 2051.
The MoCCE is also continously promoting the adoption of advanced technology in agricultural production in alignment with the UAE’s unique climate, which requires the adoption of sustainable farming systems such as organic, vertical, and hydroponic farming. Furthermore, the ministry has contributed to agricultural product marketing programmes in partnership with private sector institutions.
