Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has notched an impressive achievement, securing the 18th spot globally and ranking within the top 10 positions in Asia among the best computer science institutions, as per CSRankings.
This remarkable recognition underscores the university's commitment to cutting-edge research across diverse realms of computer science. MBZUAI's faculty members, with an unwavering dedication to excellence, have produced a total of 104 publications, spanning Artificial Intelligence (AI), Computer Vision (CV), Machine Learning (ML), Natural Language Processing (NLP), and even delving into interdisciplinary subjects, with three publications in Robotics.
A key highlight is the 25 faculty members actively contributing to these publications, as noted by CSRankings, showcasing the institution's vibrant intellectual community.
In a global context, MBZUAI has soared above esteemed institutions in the field, surpassing the likes of Johns Hopkins University (29), New York University (30), the University of Toronto (33), and the University of Edinburgh (45) in this metrics-based ranking system.
This accomplishment takes on added significance when viewed alongside the world's top 20 institutions, where MBZUAI proudly stands alongside renowned names such as Peking University (1), Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) (5), Stanford University (7), and University of California – Berkeley (18).
The achievement reflects not only MBZUAI's dedication to academic excellence, but also its prominent position among global leaders in computer science education and research.

According to the official website of the university, President and University Professor Eric Xing expressed his deep sense of pride in MBZUAI's accomplishments. He stated: “Our university has developed a significant array of intellectual assets and plays host to a remarkable pool of talent, which has enabled us to play a key research and development role in the field of generative AI.”
Xing highlighted the active role in shaping the next generation of AI specialists, emphasising their contribution to elevating knowledge and excellence in this critical area of human development. "I am very proud that we have achieved so much in just four years of operation – with a host of milestones yet to come," he added.
Notable Achievements
Notably, MBZUAI’s faculty grew to a total of 64 members last year, more than half of them hailing from the world’s 100 leading AI institutions. The university’s first two commencements featured 111 graduates with a master’s degree in computer vision, machine learning, and natural language processing. This is a testament to the university’s mission to “develop, train, and retain talent for the UAE’s economy”, as 86% of alumni hold positions in the UAE’s AI ecosystem.
As for MBZUAI’s student body, the total number of students has increased to 276, from over 40 different nationalities, many of which come from leading global undergraduate institutions. Notably, 19% of students are Emirati and 39% are women, which are impressive figures especially when compared to other computer science institutions around the world.
Other 2023 achievements include the establishment of two new departments dedicated to robotics and computer science, as well as the Incubation and Entrepreneurship Center (MIEC). Additionally, MBZUAI received its first patent from the US Patent Office, titled “System and Method for Handwriting Generation”. Moreover, the university has published over 537 papers in the past 12 months, and has initiated eight funded research collaborations.
