SAEED AHMED (UMM AL QUWAIN)

As the UAE’s “World’s Coolest Winter Campaign” is in full swing, the recently inaugurated Umm Al Quwain Creek Waterfront project marked a significant step in attracting tourists, reflecting the government’s keen interest in enhancing the sector and developing the infrastructure for all service facilities in the emirate.

The Creek Waterfront project aligns with the Sustainable Blue Economy strategy, aiming to achieve sustainable development in the emirate in addition to supporting the tourism sector and the economy in particular.

The waterfront serves as a prominent landmark, featuring various commercial shops, upscale cafes, restaurants, a two-kilometre promenade, a marina, an open-air theatre, children’s play areas, family areas, photo spots, breathtaking views, and beach activities.

Umm Al Quwain boasts a rich history dating back to the 7th millennium BCE, with the discovery of prominent archaeological sites and artifacts during archaeological excavations.

The emirate is characterised by its diverse and picturesque nature, including islands and mangroves. The main coastline of the emirate is 67km long, with mangrove trees covering about 7.8km of the coastline.

The coastline includes larger sandy islands such as Siniya Island, followed by Ghallah and Al-Akab Islands, in addition to Haramla Island. These islands are easily visible from the shore and are known for their biological and vital diversity.

Siniya Island

Siniya Island, the recipient of a UAE Excellence Award, is the largest island in Umm Al Quwain, located 1km east of the city. The island is approximately 8km long, historically inhabited by Umm Al Quwain residents. The island is flat, with mangrove and Ghaf trees, plants, and serves as a natural reserve for Arabian gazelles, seagulls, eagles, and ospreys. It holds significant archaeological importance, hosting 65 diverse archaeological sites, including tombs, shell mounds, and towers.

Al-Dur Site

Al-Dur site is one of the most important archaeological sites in the UAE and the Arabian Gulf region. It is known for multiple human settlements, dating back to the 3rd millennium BCE, continuing until the mid-3rd century CE. The Department of Tourism and Antiquities works on including the site on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Al-Shibika Site

Tourists can also visit the archaeological site of Al-Shibika, located on the road connecting Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah. It is where the second oldest pearl in history was discovered, dating back to 5500 BCE according to carbon dating, making it the second oldest archaeological pearl in the Arabian Peninsula and the world.

Tell Abraq

The archaeological site of Tell Abraq is located between the emirates of Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain, dating back to the 3rd millennium BCE. Discoveries at the site revealed its connection to the Umm Al-Nar civilisation in Abu Dhabi.

One of the most important discoveries is the finding of a circular structure of a large fortress with terraced walls built of limestone, as well as circular tombs dating back to the Umm Al-Nar period. Additionally, there were significant archaeological findings, including a collection of bronze artifacts, pottery, and relics.

Al-Sharee’a

The archaeological structures, known as “Al-Sharee’a,” are located in the Falaj Al Ma’alla area. They were built during the reign of Sheikh Abdullah bin Rashid I in 1800.

Al-Sharee’a consists of a canal that brings water from underground sources, known as “Mothers of the Falaj,” to other areas. The water flows along the ground in a straight path underground for a certain distance. These rotating flows make the water moderate and give it strength in elevation until it emerges at Al-Sharee’a. There are two Al-Sharee’as, one for men and the other for women, both of which were reopened after renovation in 2015.

In the past, Falaj Al Ma’alla was a crucial stop for caravans to rest, replenish water and food before continuing their journey. It was influenced by various factors such as continuous drought in the region, as well as the clogging of the water course in Al-Sharee’a, requiring constant periodic maintenance.

Bu Khoot Tower

Another landmark is the “Bu Khoot Tower”, which was constructed during the reign of Sheikh Abdullah bin Rashid I in 1800. It is currently located in the Umm Al Qaiwain port and was used for surveillance and as a lighthouse. The tower was built using the marine stones available in the Umm Al Qaiwain Creek at the time. Its design is coastal, incorporating maritime architectural elements due to its geographical location and the nature of the sea.

The Martyrs Monument

The Martyrs Monument was inaugurated in 2016 to honour the noble martyrs who sacrificed their lives in defence of the truth. It has become a historical landmark in the emirate, standing at a height of 33 metres with an area of 15,000 square metres, situated in front of the Amiri Diwan building.

The Umm Al Quwain Wall

The Umm Al Quwain Wall, built during the reign of Sheikh Abdullah bin Rashid I in 1820, is composed of three towers: the Khor Tower on Khor Al Baydaa, the Masoum Tower in the centre of the wall, and the Sea Tower directly on the Arabian Gulf. The wall and its three towers have been renovated by the authority, and a small park has been created around the wall, open daily to visitors.

The Karam Beach

The Karam Beach is located in the Khor Al Yefrah area. The first of its kind in the emirate, the beach aims to enhance environmental tourism by highlighting the significance of the Karam trees. It allows visitors to explore the beautiful natural areas and coastal environment of the emirate.

The Bait Walk

The Bait Walk is a unified walkway along the coast in Umm Al Quwain, stretching for 1.2 kilometres. It features a children’s play area, designated barbecue areas, and sports equipment. The walkway is frequented by visitors from various nationalities, hosting various events and recreational activities during holidays and special occasions.

Dreamland Water Park

Dreamland Water Park is the first water park in the UAE, spanning 132 square kilometres. It offers various water activities suitable for all ages, along with spaces for barbecue and camping.

Falaj Al Ma’alla Park

The Falaj Al Ma’alla Park is located at the beginning of the Falaj Al Ma’alla area, covering an area of 132 square kilometres. It is adorned with decorative shrubs, providing a charming atmosphere. The park includes diverse recreational facilities suitable for all ages, as well as areas for barbecues and relaxation.

Kite Beach

Kite Beach serves as a specialised recreational centre for various water sports. It is located in the Al Midan area and offers a range of activities, including kite flying among the Karam trees.

Umm Al Qaiwain Maritime Club

The Umm Al Quwain Maritime Club is a designated outdoor entertainment centre, away from the city’s hustle and bustle. It is an officially recognised centre for outdoor recreation, offering thrilling activities for all age groups. Visitors can enjoy activities such as camping, kayaking, fishing, rope courses, and various water sports.

Aqran Festival

The Aqran Festival is organised by the Umm Al Quwain Municipality in the Aqran desert area on Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road. Coinciding with the World's Coolest Winter Campaign, the festival runs until the end of January. It features numerous stalls showcasing traditional foods, clothing, fabrics, and children’s toys. Additionally, various entertainment activities and events take place with the participation of local producers and mobile restaurants.
