ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)
It’s winter season in the UAE, and that means it’s the perfect time to head to the desert, whether it’s for a barbecue, overnight camping, dune bashing or sand biking.
Keeping this in mind, Abu Dhabi Police have issued some guidelines for sand biking enthusiasts to follow.
Sand biking is only allowed in the desert and sandy areas, as well as tracks and dedicated clubs. It’s strictly prohibited in residential areas, public roads, industrial and military zones.
The police also warned of penalties for breaking the applicable laws.
“According to Ministerial Decision No. (178) of the year 2017 regarding the traffic control regulations for Article (92)”, jeopardising road users by “using a leisure bike with three or more wheels on the road” will result in a fine of Dh3,000 and retention of the vehicle 90 days (during which the vehicle cannot be used), the police said.
The police also issued some safety guidelines for sand bikers:
1. Ensure the front and rear lights are working
2. Check the tyres for wear and tear, and maintain optimum pressure
3. Attach reflective stickers
4. Ensure the brakes are working properly
5. Avoid making any modifications that may result in increased speed or noise
6. Wear specialised clothing
7. Use a good helmet
8. Avoid carrying passengers
9. Don’t perform reckless actions or drive at high speeds
10. Choose a bike that suits your physical abilities
11. Stop when tired
12. Use seat belts
