IHAB AL RIFAI (AL DHAFRA)
The Municipality of Al Dhafra Region provides approximately 13.1 billion gallons of groundwater annually through implementing a slew of initiatives that aim to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs).
These involve the introduction of a seasonal irrigation strategy that contributed to reducing water consumption as well as removing trees with high water consumption from forests and cities, and replacing them with local trees of an aesthetic nature, which are also tolerant to the salinity of irrigation water and the environmental conditions of the region.
This contributed to keeping sand off the roads, saving irrigation water and expanding the vegetation cover. The municipality also filled in many abandoned wells as part of the green spaces sustainability project, which also contributed to maintaining public safety.
The Municipality continues to implement its strategy to rationalise the use of groundwater and increase the vegetation cover by adopting innovative methods and techniques to reduce the depletion of groundwater and rationalised irrigation. The Municipality of Al Dhafra is committed to applying the best practices in the field of environmental sustainability, in line with the comprehensive development plan for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The Municipality, in cooperation with strategic partners, organised the “Sustainability Summer” event, coinciding with the Year of Sustainability, with the participation of school students during the summer vacation.
The event, held on the beach of Dalma island, included many entertainment activities and workshops that promote the concept of sustainability and enhance environmental awareness among children.
