NEW YORK CITY (ALETIHAD)

His Excellency Mohamed Abushahab, the Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations in New York, delivered The UAE Statement at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting, focusing on the critical political and humanitarian situation in Syria.

Ambassador Abushahab offered insightful reflections on the Council's efforts since 2014, particularly emphasising the cross-border mechanism established to meet the needs of the Syrian people.

Despite the success in providing relief aid to millions through crossings like Bab al-Hawa, Bab al-Salama, and Al-Rai, he noted a concerning disparity: the political track in Syria has not garnered the same level of attention.

Abushahab stressed the urgency of intensifying efforts on the political front, alongside the ongoing humanitarian aid.

He underscored the belief that a peaceful solution is paramount to ending the Syrian people's suffering sustainably and restoring stability in the region.

“Over the past several years, the political track has not seen any concrete progress towards ending the Syrian crisis. Meanwhile, the humanitarian and economic conditions have continued to deteriorate to unprecedented levels,” he said, noting that over 15 million Syrians are currently in need of aid.

The Ambassador also highlighted the gravity of the displacement crisis, with approximately seven million displaced Syrians, advocating for conditions that enable their voluntary, dignified, and safe return.

He emphasised the importance of the Constitutional Committee's role in facilitating a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned resolution process, free from foreign interference, noting that “merely holding meetings is not sufficient”.

He called for a concerted diplomatic effort focused on resolving, not just managing, the Syrian crisis.

“We are closely monitoring with concern the violent escalations in northwestern Syria, along the Jordanian-Syrian border, and across other regions in Syria. These developments reaffirm the need to continue working toward de-escalation and a ceasefire throughout all Syrian regions,” the Ambassador said.

Abushahab expressed a hopeful vision for Syria's future, emphasising its rich history and the deserved dignity of its people.

He reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to supporting efforts aimed at restoring Syria's security and stability, marking a hopeful note for a nation striving to turn a page on conflict.
